Daily Inspiration: Meet D’Auviyon Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to D’Auviyon Johnson

Hi D’Auviyon , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated during the pandemic and that made school all online learning based. I was entering college at the time and did not know what I wanted to pursue. The online classes were very boring to me and not something I could follow. I finished out my one year and decided to go to nail school instead. This was still a challenge as Covid protocols made my learning experience different from others in the past. I went to school at night after working 10 hour shifts during the day. I completed my mandatory schools hours in 5 months. I was able to try for my license then. I went to the testing center which had been modified since Covid, and took my hands-on test. I passed and was able to sign up to take my online comprehension part of my license. I signed up to take the first available test and passed as well. I was now looking to upgrade all of the materials since school and look for work. I was offered a job upon passing my exams, so I started working in a salon suite right away. That was in 2022. It is now 2025, I have an LLC for my business Nailz By Slim. I have been in business for 2.5 years. I love the clientele I have gained, I have a passion for the art of nails as a whole, and I have grown personally. This has been an amazing journey so far and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I started my nail journey in a global pandemic which has ever been heard of before. As well as challenges to school itself like studying and practice, I had to also manage life outside of school. I was a fresh out of high school, I had a part-time job, and I had a life. So managing waking up t 5 in the morning, going to work from 6am to 4pm, driving an hour to get to school, taking nail classes from 5pm to 10 pm, driving back home, only to wake up and do it all again. I was not mentally nor physically prepared for what my body endured for 5 months, but it was all worth it in the end.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed nail tech in the state of South Carolina. When I was younger and would leave the nail salons, I would only want them to do the bare minimum so I could go home and jazz up my nails myself. I would add colors, designs, stickers, charms, you name it i did it. Soon I realized, I was spending money to not even get what I asked for in the salon. So after high school I decided to go to nail school and get my license. Now doing nails for almost 3 years. I have done so many creative nails, tried so many new trends I see online, and even learned how to do both of my own hands for double creative fun. It has been a journey looking at my first hand drawn art to now. I truly even surprise myself sometime.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
The apps I use the most for creative designs are Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok. I use those when a new trend comes out or I am trying to make a crazy nail design. In my personal life no apps, books, podcasts, or blogs really help me out.
