Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Damon
Hi Chelsea, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Healthy families and marriages have always been a massive passion of mine. My husband and I married pretty young, both 21, and we had to learn quickly how to work through complex issues, especially without family or a robust support system nearby. I started my blog, ChelseaDamon.com, on marriage and family in 2015 as a young mom and would stay up writing late into the night after I put our son to bed. About a year later, I started focusing on growing my social media presence and began working as an influencer and content creator with brand partners. In 2018, I had the privilege of riding my first book, “Together With Christ: A Datings Couples Devotional.” I’m excited to publish my second book, “I Thought This Would Make Me Happy: How to Fight Less, Forgive Faster, and Cultivate Joy in Your Marriage.”
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I started writing on my blog, it was a side project. As a young mom who was also working, I felt an extreme need for a creative outlet (I’ve always loved both writing and visual art). At first, I was embarrassed to tell others about my online presence–talk about imposter syndrome. But after a while, I started getting a lot of other positive feedback from men and women in similar stages of life, and that helped push me to do more with my blog and social media presence. And although I’m a far cry from perfect, I’ve also learned a lot about balancing work and family. I couldn’t do any of my work or writing without my husband’s support, and I’m so grateful to him. I’ve had to learn to separate work from family time as best I can. When they blend, things start to feel chaotic and stressful. I like to work as hard as I can while the kids are in school so I can give them my full attention when they’re home in the evenings.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Although I still work full-time in marketing, my passion is writing to connect with those in similar life phases as myself. It started with my blog, Living the Sweet Wife, and evolved into the books I’ve written for dating, engaged, and married couples. I want my readers to experience what it is to have truly healthy and joyful relationships. When I receive messages saying that my books have helped couples forge deeper connections in their relationships, nothing makes me happier. It makes all the hard work of writing the articles and books worth it.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I talk to many people who say they could never imagine working full-time, raising a family, and writing books on the side. It’s then that I typically remind them that I can’t only take some of the credit. It would not have been possible without my husband’s earnest love and support. We truly function as a team. Beyond that, I have a terrible habit of considering an endeavor and thinking, “How hard could it be?” Typically, I completely underestimated how hard it actually could be! But in the meantime, I stay pretty disciplined about how I segment my time between work, passion projects, and family, and I am careful not to burn out on any of them. It’s rarely a perfect balance, but it has improved immensely. The only way that’s possible for me is by staying highly organized. Everything goes on my calendar, and to anyone who listens, I’ll tell them how beneficial the Notion program is in keeping my work, writing, and family life organized.
