Today we’d like to introduce you to Chasity Pinckney-Rivers.
Hi Chasity, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in the beauty industry in 2010 as a hairstylist with a strong focus on healthy hair care. Over time, I noticed many of my clients were struggling with hair loss, thinning edges, and scalp disorders, and there weren’t many professionals truly addressing those issues in a clinical way. That led me to pursue advanced education and become a certified Hair Loss Practitioner and Trichologist.
Today, I’m the founder of SophistaCurlz Hair Restoration Clinic & Beauty Bar, where I specialize in scalp health and hair restoration treatments. I’ve also developed my own line of hair care products, including both clinical-grade treatments and everyday maintenance products to support healthy hair at home. My mission is to combine science, beauty, and education to help clients restore their hair and rebuild their confidence.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely wasn’t a completely smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, my journey actually started during a time of uncertainty. Back in 2009, during the government shutdown, those of us working in city government were told that we could potentially be furloughed or even lose our jobs. That moment really made me think about the importance of having something of my own.
So while still working full-time in city government, I made the decision to enroll in cosmetology school at night in 2009. I was essentially building a second career while maintaining my first. By 2010, I had officially started my journey in the salon industry.
From the beginning, balancing a full-time government career while growing a business required long hours, sacrifice, and a lot of determination. There were nights and weekends dedicated to clients, education, and building the brand while still showing up every day to fulfill my responsibilities with the city.
Another challenge was building the right team. As the business grew, I realized that success isn’t something you build alone. Finding people who truly align with your standards, your work ethic, and your vision takes time and patience.
Developing my product line was also a journey. I wanted to create products that truly supported the work I was doing with my clients, so that meant investing time into research, testing, and making sure the formulas actually helped with scalp health, hair restoration, and overall hair maintenance.
But looking back, every challenge played a role in shaping the business into what it is today. Those experiences taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of staying committed to your vision even when things aren’t easy.
And one thing I’ve learned through this journey is that sometimes the moments that feel like setbacks are actually the moments that push you toward your purpose. What started as a response to uncertainty in 2009 eventually grew into SophistaCurlz Hair Restoration Clinic & Beauty Bar, and today I’m grateful that I chose to bet on myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One piece of advice I always give is don’t wait until everything feels perfect to start. Many people think they need to have every detail figured out before taking the first step, but the truth is that a lot of your growth happens during the process.
When I started my journey, I was working full-time in city government while building my salon business, so I had to learn how to manage my time, stay disciplined, and keep moving forward even when things felt overwhelming. It required patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep learning.
I would also encourage anyone starting a business to invest in education and mentorship. Whether that’s training in your field, business knowledge, or learning from people who have already walked the path, those things can make a huge difference.
Another important lesson I’ve learned is to build something that solves a real problem. For me, that meant focusing on hair loss and scalp health, because I saw firsthand how many women were struggling with those issues and didn’t have the right support.
Most importantly, believe in your vision even when the journey isn’t easy. Entrepreneurship will stretch you, challenge you, and sometimes even test your confidence. But if you stay committed, keep learning, and remain passionate about what you’re building, the results will come.
Because at the end of the day, your purpose will always be stronger than your obstacles if you’re willing to keep going.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m entering a really exciting season. After 28 years of service with the City of Columbia, I will be retiring in June 2027. That transition will allow me to dedicate my full focus to growing the business and expanding the vision I’ve been building for years.
Today, SophistaCurlz Hair Restoration Clinic & Beauty Bar has grown into a family-owned clinical salon, with my husband and both of my daughters working alongside me. Having my family involved has been incredibly meaningful because we’re building something together that can grow for generations.
One of the big goals for the future is continuing to expand as a hybrid clinical salon, combining beauty services with advanced scalp health and hair restoration treatments. We’re also planning to take the clinic on the road as a mobile salon clinic, traveling nationwide to provide education, consultations, and hair restoration services to communities that may not have access to specialized care.
Our mission is simple but powerful: to help people restore their hair and confidence — saving follicles one strand at a time.
I’m really looking forward to this next chapter where I can pour my full energy into the clinic, expand our reach, and continue helping more people across the country.
