Daily Inspiration: Meet Cam Ruiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Ruiz

Hi Cam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m glad you ask! I was born in Augusta, GA and raised in Johnston, SC, “The Peach Capital Of The World” or “The Peach Fields.” Growing up, I was always into cars, sports, sports gear and tech to name a few. I stayed up to date on my sports teams often. I also was always into how tech worked and the moving parts to make it all come together. I would help my dad work on his cars as well as helping my grandparents with yard work. As I grew older, I was always a fan of starting my own business eventually somehow combining both tech and sports. After noticing how athletes were getting media coverage as early as high school, I figured I could start there and that could be my business. Cam Behind The Cam was officially founded in 2018, when I was 14. I was gifted an iPhone for my birthday that year, as I started off shooting with that. My mom had an extra laptop she eventually gave me, so huge shoutout to her. As I grew more, my skills grew more through brainstorming and research. Shortly after I started, I met the great mentor of mine Keith Andrews, who took me under his wing. Keith eventually helped me get my first camera, and taught me even more when it came to shooting, editing, and even promoting and marketing. I consider myself one of his very first students he has mentored since. As time grew, the business has done nothing but grow when it comes to numbers, clients, and even now with merchandise. It’s been a huge blessing to have come this far! All of the places I’ve been and memories I’ve made all because of my “business” I started in my bedroom at 14 has done nothing but make me proud of myself to say the least. All glory to God!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At first, I would say revenue to start. I saw how expensive equipment was. With not many jobs for kids around my area, I had to be creative. I worked for my grandparents to help get started. Keith Andrews also helped me get my first camera as well.

Consistency and continuing to stay balanced with life, school, and the business is definitely an obstacle at times. I just stay prayed up and smart with my time and everything else handles itself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize and am known for creating full game highlights, highlight tapes, as well as documentaries more than anything. You can also catch me filming content for underground artists. I’m most proud of helping athletes and artists from the smaller & less known towns, the towns folks overlook. I feel like that sets me apart from others more than anything when it comes to this field of work. I tend to help those market themselves to the best of my ability when shooting and filming. I find a ton of passion throughout the whole process from the long drives, late night traveling, early mornings, filming, the amount of editing and much more! Cam Behind The Cam has been in existence since I was 14 in 2018 and it has done nothing but grow so much since then. One day I want to cover an event in another country and eventually expand to that level.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
A good bit of things matter for me. Starting with God, without him I am nothing. My family is for sure second. My personal life, school, and my business also matter a ton as well. I’ve continued to get even closer to God over time to say the least as well as doing a better job of finding a balance between my personal life and school while maintaining my company and business overall. Another thing that matters to me is the passion and hard-work that goes into all of this in general. The entire process and seeing myself conquer it all means an extreme amount to me personally. These are some of the things that matter to me the most.
