Today we’d like to introduce you to Zarena Flemmings
Hi Zarena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a girly girl with a love for hair, makeup and fashion. However, I never saw it as a career. I actually started off in the medical field and transitioned into cosmetology on a leap of faith. I made the decision that instead of applying for the nursing program, I applied for cosmetology and it was the best decision I ever made! Once I completed the cosmetology program, I worked in a commission based salon for about six months and took another leap of faith straight into booth rental. I birthed Textures & Tones by Zarena LLC in 2014 and have sustained and grown my business for 11 plus years now. I opened my salon suite in March of 2024 and I’m absolutely in love with it!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothin in my life has been smooth, but I’m a very determined and resilient woman. Once I set my mind to do something, it’s done! I’m not much of a talker, I’m a doer and I make things happen for myself and my children. There have been countless struggles along my path, from one of the salons where I worked burning down in a fire where I lost everything and had to start anew, to financial strain and having to maintain my business while rebuilding my entire life as I’m currently going through a divorce. The struggles have been beyond words, yet I’m still standing and thriving!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Textures & Tones by Zarena LLC is located inside of Phenix Salon Suites off of Laurens Rd in Greenville, SC. I specialize in natural hair care and custom color services. I offer my guests a luxury one on one salon experience that sets me apart from others in my industry. Every appointment is customized for each guest that I service and I really make sure that they have an unforgettable experience during their time with me. I’m so proud of my new suite and the brand that I’ve built on this journey of my career.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I LOVE Greenville and what I love best about this city is the downtown area. You can find me at the park, just sitting in nature journaling, reading, vibing to music, people watching, and just taking a moment to ground and recenter myself. It truly is my happy place! The thing I like least about my city is the rapid growth and the traffic.
