Today we’d like to introduce you to Susannah Nivens.
Hi Susannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a family-owned and operated farm in Sharon, SC. Sharon Hill Farm has prioritized back-to-basics farming from its inception in 2016. We will continue these regenerative farming practices through pasture raised chicken, turkey, pork, and beef as well as chicken eggs.
Sharon Hill Farm started as a two-family owned farm in 2016. The previous owners combined the names of their towns to create the farm name. Sharon Hill Farm is now owned and operated by the Scoggins family in Sharon, SC. We work hard to raise healthy food for your table.
Our farm tagline is ‘Back to Basics’ which to us means raising our animals in the most natural or ‘basic’ way possible. Our cattle are grass-fed and our chickens are outside eating grass and insects as soon as they have feathers and can comfortably live on pasture. We truly believe that creating the best possible quality of life for our animals creates a healthier and tastier product for us!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since taking over the farm from the previous owners almost 4 years ago we have learned a great deal about taking care/raising these animals and all the work involved! It has not been the smoothest ride but it is a rewarding job we are allowed to do. We have faced many struggles including egg shortages due to weather changes, product loss due to freezer malfunctions which is the toughest struggle of all and learning to balance a growing schedule for our meat birds to ensure we have fresh meats available at all times to our faithful customers. We have weathered predators, army worms trying to destroy the grasses in our pasture and even severe storms causing us to loose several mobile coops for our chickens but through it all we would not want to spend our time any other way!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in raising pastured chicken. We move our meat birds to fresh pasture daily so they can forage for bugs and pick through green grasses to ensure a healthy option for families. We are known for our various option of chicken sausage such as pineapple & pepper jack cheese links, Garlic & rosemary links and Jalapeno & cheese links to name a few. We are also known for our thanksgiving turkeys also raised in the same way as our chickens, out on pasture foraging for bugs! I am most proud of all the hard work and challenges my family and i have made it through to keep pushing towards our goal to expand and make sure everyone has the option for fresh meat and eggs to actually know who is raising their food on their table.
What matters most to you?
Most importantly the health and welfare of our animals matters most. A healthy life where animals are treated with respect and well taken care of.
