Conversations with Sophie Joines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Joines.

Hi Sophie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was a little girl I had many dreams. One to be a jockey, another to be a singer, but mostly I just wanted to keep dreaming. I’ve never had one set dream and then had a plan to do it. But one dream I keep coming back to is music. It’s important to pay attention to the ones that just seem to keep creeping in no matter how much you do to try to follow the path that is “practical.” My first single “Free” by Sophie Mae is out now on all streaming platforms!

I grew up in a musical household, my mom has been a Christian artist since the 80’s and my dad has been a sound engineer since he was 19. My sister and I took to music very naturally and it has been in our blood ever since.

Growing up I was never good at school, and I always saw it as a bad thing. These days I realize I growing up never should’ve never been so focused around those things, but rather discovering who God has uniquely made you to be. But if I’m being honest, thats the last thing this world wants you to know. I accept that I’m not good at conventional things, but I know what I am good at and am finally discovering more and more of the things I love as I grow up.

Two of my biggest passions: singing and teaching people about Jesus. In all my years of being a believer, I had no idea how good what I have is. A friend of mine says, “just wait, it gets gooder and gooder.” It’s like religious scales fell from my eyes when He revealed to me that Christ is my life. It’s never been about what I do or don’t do that determined how much or how little God thought of me.

But through Christ in me, His thoughts of me are that I am completely loved, safe, precious, pure, accepted, and worthy. No matter what I do or don’t do, I am precious to him. I am passionate about sharing this gospel of Grace, not as a license to do whatever you want- but to realize that when you are in Christ you are free to be yourself, and that new self doesn’t want to sin. We focus on sin so much as Christian’s but what I love to focus on is actually what you’re believing. You only live out of what you’re believing to be true about yourself, God, and others and I lived most of my Christian life believing more lies than truth about all of those above.

So in my songs, and in my teaching, I dream of Jesus revealing to the world the truth of who He is and in turn believers would learn who they are in Christ. With Christ as your life, you can learn how to depend on Him for any and every detail of life here on earth.

“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭9‬-‭10

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge of all for me has been to trust God’s timing and to stay in the moment and not try to jump so far into the future. I would love to be singing and speaking full time, but it takes time to get there. In the meantime, picking up jobs and trying to figure out what you may be happy doing until you’re finally doing what you love 100% of the time is difficult but not impossible. But because of what I know of Christ in me as my hope, my peace, my patience, waiting and trusting is possible even when it feels impossible!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a singer/songwriter and a speaker. I believe what sets me apart is that I have an authenticity that cannot be manufactured. It comes from years of trials, trusting God through unknowns, and have gone from being a very religious Christian to freedom to live from Jesus as my source of everything.

I am a free spirit who loves all people and genuinely desires to see people set free from the bondage of religion. My lyrics come straight from my heart and through all of my journey I will keep it real no matter what season of life I am in.

I believe I am known for cultivating space for people to show up as they are and truly leave feeling seen and loved. When Christ loves and lives through you, you are loving others with a true love that can only come from the source of love himself.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me would be a life filled with family and friends that you love and enjoy being around, making income doing what you love, and not working more than you live. You have to know and believe that you are successful before you ever feel successful because the feeling may never come, but when you have Christ – you have everything that is His. You lack nothing.

“And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭15‬:‭31‬
