Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheree Wright.
Hi Sheree, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always loved music and loved Jesus, so becoming a songwriter feels natural. But when I was 9 I believed a boy in my class when he told me I couldn’t sing, and that silenced my voice for over a decade. One summer when I was 21 I was working at a Chick-fil-A drive thru, and a customer asked me if I sing. When I replied, “only in my car and in the shower,” she told me God says I’m to belt it out. So I did. I got voice lessons to help with my confidence and started singing in church. Fast forward another 20+ years and my songs are being played worldwide. I am now a coach for singers and songwriters, helping them find their voice to “belt it out” and share their gifts with the world. I also work with a local organization called Worship Cooperative to bring together worship pastors across the Upstate to unite churches through songwriting.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. I have battled insecurity and had to overcome rejection throughout my life. Several songwriting camps turned me down. I doubted myself when my home church wouldn’t add my songs to Sunday morning services. But I kept going and got accepted to other writing camps. Churches in other states and countries started singing my songs on Sundays, and I was invited to be a guest worship leader at churches and retreats. The perseverance paid off.
Releasing music without a record label is complicated, and in the beginning I had to do a ton of research to figure it out on my own. I eventually found a mentor to help, and within two years of being in Brad’s Kingdom Music Academy, he hired me on as a coach to teach others what I’ve learned.
My songwriting career didn’t really take off until after I had kids, so I wrote and recorded songs in the midst of working and managing a household with three littles. Most of my early demos have kid noises in the background, but I love that it’s part of my journey. God blessed me with an administrative brain in addition to creativity. Otherwise I would have given up a long time ago.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When people ask what I do for a living, I love to say that I help people sparkle and shine. Whether I’m co-writing a song, raising my kids, coaching a client or talking with a friend, my favorite thing is to see the best in people and help show it off. Every person on the planet has something unique that makes the world a better place. We’re not meant to hide that spark–we’re meant to shine! My music tends to be positive and give people courage to shine brighter.
My latest song GYOAT encompasses all of that in a really fun way. My daughter Selah and my friend Hannah wrote it in the car on a road trip, as a joke to fit a bunch of Gen Z slang into a song. As we’re shared our song with friends to make them laugh, we found it really inspired people. GYOAT stands for Greatest You Of All Time, and we’re basically telling people to stop trying to be like someone else and be the best version of themselves. “Just like me, but not like me.”
Bragging about my friends and helping others see how awesome they are has always been fun and easy for me. Now I cannot believe I get paid to do it!
What are your plans for the future?
The promo for my new song GYOAT is making my belly laugh and have the time of my life! The song itself has an 80’s vibe, so Hannah and I dressed in retro outfits to record the music video in a mall (until we got kicked out). I have a bright teal track suit that I’ve been wearing all over the place dancing to the song and encouraging others to take more dance breaks. So if you see me around town randomly dancing in a teal track suit, feel free to join in!
Another big project I’m excited about right now is a songwriting retreat in Puerto Rico. After our retreat in Greenville last May, Worship Cooperative was invited to put on a retreat in Aguadilla to bring together worship leaders on the island and teach them to write songs for the Church. We’ve been hosting monthly co-writes and annual retreats to build community around songwriting, and getting to cast that vision in other regions makes my heart want to explode with joy.
