Conversations with Salvador Carire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salvador Carire.

Hi Salvador, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello, I’m Pepe Carire. I learned to Tattoo while I was stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard in Puerto Rico as a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer in 1998-99. I continued tattooing part time the entire time while still on active duty with the Coast Guard. Once I retired after 21 years of service, I continued tattooing full time and started attending tattoo conventions. I can honestly say I’ve had two dream jobs in my life! Now I’m living the dream!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest thing I had to deal with was working two very demanding jobs. As a Rescue Swimmer I had to be physically and mentally fit to be able to rescue people in distress, and as a tattooer, I had to be mentally engaged while drawing for clients since tattoos are permanent and require proper planning and composition for the client. I care very much on how my clients designs fit them so I put a lot of effort into every design. This meant lots of sleep deprived nights drawing followed by very tired days to perform my duties as a Rescue Swimmer! It did build character though! But the good thing was, I didn’t have to deal with hungry sharks at my tattoo station like I did after jumping out of a helicopter! Lol

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I tattoo for a living now and specialize in Illustrative Neotraditional tattoos with bold color. I’m most proud of being able to be a part of the Hell City Tattoo Festival, and invitation only tattoo convention held in Columbus Ohio and Phoenix Arizona. It’s a Tattoo convention that has been around for over 20 years and which I remember reading about it in magazines when I began tattooing and I would dream about someday going to see the event. Now, I’m a part of the event! It blows my mind and I’m super proud of that! What sets me apart from others is my method of coloring my tattoos. I try to give them a super saturated, air brushed look which hardly anyone uses in the tattoo industry.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One of my favorite books is The Book of Five Rings by Musashi Miyamoto. Favorite app is Procreate which I use daily as my art design process. Favorite podcast is Not Fer Nuthin by Joe Capobianco where he interviews different Tattoo artists from across the country.
