Conversations with Renee Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Wilson

Hi Renee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before embarking on my creative career, I spent nearly 15 years in corporate America. Eventually, I realized that I was no longer fulfilled by my work and had been pursuing my creative passions on the side. When I found myself dedicating more time and energy to my passion than to my corporate job, I knew it was time to make a change.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I faced a few struggles early on in my creative journey, particularly when it came to marketing my brand to consumers. There are several resources I wish I had known about at the time, as they would have been immensely useful. As a self-taught designer, I never took any formal courses in fashion and merchandising, so access to that information earlier would have significantly aided in branding and marketing my designs and products.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a self-taught fashion designer with over 20 years of experience. I am of Liberian descent and growing up, I was always surrounded by African fashions and fabrics, which were generally reserved for special occasions or ceremonies. back then, I thought how amazing it would be to see some of these fabrics used in everyday wear. My brand, Ethyl B, specializes in custom garments featuring Ankara fabrics, though I also work with standard fabrics. The brand is named after my daughter, Blythe (her name spelled backward), as her style and creativity are the primary inspirations for my designs.

Five years ago, I transformed my passion into a profitable venture by establishing my LLC. While my line primarily caters to women, I’ve recently expanded to include collections for men and children.

I am proud to create unique designs that resonate with people and reflect their individuality. It is incredibly fulfilling to see my creations come to life and be worn by others. I’m also proud to promote diversity and inclusivity in fashion. Designing clothes that celebrate different cultures, body types, and backgrounds is a significant achievement for me.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that my city has multiple areas dedicated to creatives and the performing arts. Being surrounded by various works of art and different aspects of creative culture, whether I’m walking through downtown or visiting nearby coffee shops, really fosters my creativity and drive.
