Conversations with Nyjah Monique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyjah Monique

Hi Nyjah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a house where music wasn’t just background noise, it was the main character. My mom was deep in the House music scene, my granddad loved jazz, my dad had the kind of car bass that made the whole block vibrate, and my grandma? She stayed singing. So, of course, I picked up the clarinet at six, started teaching myself piano by ear at 13, and somehow ended up at a major record label before I was even old enough to drive.

But even with all that, I wasn’t always sure I was supposed to be in the music industry. I had these big dreams but also big doubts. I struggled with imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and that little voice in my head saying, “Girl, is this really for you?” But every time I tried to step away, music would tap me on the shoulder like, “Where you think you going?”

Fast forward, and now I’m the founder of Signature Sound, a space built for Black introverted independent artists who move different. I realized that a lot of artists, especially the ones who aren’t naturally loud or extroverted, don’t get the same kind of support. And I wanted to change that.

With Signature Sound, I help artists develop their visuals, prep for interviews, strategize their careers, and even plan their tours while making sure they stay true to who they are. I’ve got artists like Tam The Viibe and Ac3 Sage on my roster, and we’re not just making music, we’re building legacies.

I also created Cozy Concerts, a YouTube show where homebodies headline because not every artist wants to be in a sweaty, overcrowded venue, and guess what? They shouldn’t have to be.

The journey hasn’t been perfect. I’ve had moments where I wanted to quit, where I questioned everything. But every time I do, I remember why I started. I built this to give artists the space I wish I had when I first started out.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey to building Signature Sound hasn’t been all smooth sailing. I’ve had to fight through a mix of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and straight-up burnout. For the longest time, I was scared to fully go all in on myself. I knew I had the skills, the vision, and the passion, but I kept hesitating, like, what if I fail? What if people don’t take me seriously? What if I’m not as good as I think I am? It took me a long time to realize that the only way to really fail was to not even try.

I used to think everything had to be flawless before I could put it out. Every idea, every project, every move; if it wasn’t “perfect,” I felt like I couldn’t do it. And you know what that led to? A whole lot of nothing getting done. I had to learn that done is better than perfect, and most of the time, people don’t even notice the tiny details I was stressing over.

I knew I didn’t want to create just another music business. I wanted Signature Sound to be different, to be a safe space for Black introverted artists to grow without forcing themselves to be something they’re not. But building something new? That meant breaking old industry rules, finding my own lane, and trusting my gut. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.

At the end of the day, all these struggles shaped me. They pushed me to keep going even when I wanted to quit, and they made me even more committed to helping artists like me find their voice, their confidence, and their place in this industry, on their terms.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I help Black introverted independent artists show up, stand out, and shine, without forcing themselves to be something they’re not. Through Signature Sound, I provide creative direction, artist development, media & interview coaching, event and tour planning/management, and content strategy that helps artists move with clarity and confidence. Whether it’s shaping a visual brand, preparing for interviews, creating content without burnout, or coordinating a tour, I make sure artists have everything they need to elevate their artistry and move like the icons they’re meant to be.

I specialize in creative direction, media & interview coaching, creative consulting, event planning, and content strategy for introverted artists. I’m known for helping introverted artists move at their own pace while still making major moves.
I’m proud of creating Signature Sound and turning it into a hub for independent artists to develop and thrive and breaking the mold of what an independent artist’s journey “should” look like and helping them create a path that works for them.

What sets me apart is I get introverted artists because I am one; I know the struggle of wanting to share your art but not wanting to be on all the time. Also, I bring a rare mix of industry knowledge, creative vision, and strategic thinking; I’m not just telling artists what to do; I’m giving them real, actionable game that actually works. Signature Sound provides safe, intentional spaces for artists to grow without feeling like they have to change who they are. My work is deeply personal and artist-focused because I genuinely care about the artists I work with and make sure they feel seen, valued, and set up for success.

At the end of the day, I do this because music has always been a part of me. It’s shaped my life in every way, and I know how powerful it is. Helping artists find their voice, tell their story, and thrive on their own terms? That’s what keeps me going.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people about me is the wild conundrum of being both a homebody and a traveler; like, how do those two things even exist in the same person?! I was literally a flight attendant, bouncing from city to city, soaking in new places, meeting people, and having all these incredible experiences. But at my core? I’m a homebody through and through. Give me a cozy night in with music, books, and candles over a packed event any day.

I think that’s why I’m so intentional about creating spaces for introverted artists because I get what it’s like to love the world but also need to retreat from it. That balance of exploration and solitude is what fuels my creativity, and I bring that same energy into my work. I help artists move, grow, and expand but in a way that still honors their natural rhythm.

So yeah, I’ve traveled the world, but I’ve also mastered the art of making every space feel like home. And that’s exactly what I help artists do, too.
