Conversations with Matthew Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Richardson

Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Artistic expression has been an integral part of my life from a young age. Started out drawing, and over time, dabbled in several other creative hobbies like painting and music. Around 2013, I picked up my first camera, and I immediately fell in love with photography. Since then, its been my most consistent and favorite way to create.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Thankfully, there haven’t been many barriers to this. Because photography is artistic expression for me, and not a business, I don’t have the challenges of running a business to contend with. The biggest challenge these days is finding the opportunity to devote to creating. Adulting doesn’t always leave the time for photography pursuits.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
my photography is at the intersection of my love of creating art and my desire to help others see something in themselves that they may not otherwise see. My favorite thing about photography has been the opportunity to create with those close to me who maybe haven’t seen themselves being involved with photography and the follow up “WOW, we did those!?” I have a strong belief that everyone deserves to see themselves represented in an artistic light, and what I love is being trusted to foster a safe space for them to participate in that creative process.

Inspiration for most shoots have come from from just capturing life as art. Because this is a purely creative outlet for me and not a business, very rarely have i shot in studios or with lots of equipment. Often its just me, the subject, and the camera. I am also inspired by Renaissance art and classical figure model work. I’ve actually been shooting a personal project based around one of my favorite paintings, “Venus of Urbino” by Tiziano Vecelli.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
In no particular order;

– my wife and my dog
– the process of photo shoots
– Experiencing artistic expression real time, like live bands or painting, figure drawing sessions, crafting, etc.
– Aquariums, and especially the moon jelly tanks. Moon jelly tanks are like living lava lamps
– Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies
