From Blowouts to Blueprints: My Unexpected Journey to Charleston Real Estate
Hi, I’m Larissa, and my life has been anything but a straight line. Looking back, it feels like each chapter, from the bustling streets of Chicago to the charming avenues of Charleston, has uniquely prepared me for where I am today – helping people find their own little piece of this beautiful city.
Growing up in Chicago, life took an unexpected turn early on with young motherhood and then navigating the challenges of divorce. But those early years ignited a fire in me. I knew I needed to build a stable future, and my creative side led me to cosmetology. Getting my license and then working as a stylist at Trump Tower was an incredible experience. It was fast-paced, demanding, and taught me so much about connecting with people, understanding their individual needs, and delivering a service that made them feel good. In that world, it was all about the details, about listening, and about making someone feel seen – skills that, surprisingly, have become cornerstones of my success in real estate.
Life then took another significant turn when I moved cross-country to Charleston. The decision was rooted in family, wanting to support the father of my children who builds high-rises. It was a leap of faith, leaving behind the familiar energy of Chicago for a new chapter in the South.
Once in Charleston, I felt that familiar entrepreneurial itch. Real estate felt like a natural fit, a place where I could combine my understanding of people with my eye for aesthetics and my drive to build something. Honestly, I was a little nervous diving into a new industry, but something just clicked. Within my first 30 days of getting my license, I had eight active buyer agency agreements! It was exhilarating and confirmed that all those seemingly different experiences in my past had actually equipped me perfectly for this.
When I think about it, my journey has been a masterclass in adaptability and the power of transferable skills. My time as a stylist honed my customer service abilities. You learn to really listen to what people want, even when they don’t articulate it perfectly. You learn to build trust and make them feel comfortable. That’s exactly what I do with my real estate clients. Buying or selling a home is a huge decision, and people need someone who will truly hear them and guide them through the process with care.
Even my earlier years, working in my family’s dental office in Chicago, played a role. It instilled in me a sense of professionalism, the importance of precision and attention to detail, and the value of building long-term relationships with clients. While teeth and houses might seem worlds apart, the foundation of providing excellent service and building trust is the same.
Looking back, I see how each experience has woven into the fabric of who I am today. Being a young mom taught me resilience. Cosmetology nurtured my creativity and client focus. Moving across the country showed me I can embrace change. And those early lessons in the dental office grounded me in professionalism.
Now, as a real estate agent in Charleston, I feel like all those pieces have come together. I approach each client relationship with an entrepreneurial spirit, always looking for creative solutions and going the extra mile. My focus is always on providing exceptional service and building genuine connections. My journey might have been unconventional, but I wouldn’t trade any of it. It’s made me the person – and the real estate agent – I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is actually a beautiful blend of two incredible experiences: traveling the world with my family and being immersed in the vibrant theater scene of Chicago. Looking back, it feels like I had this extraordinary dual upbringing. Traveling instilled in me a deep curiosity about the world and a profound appreciation for different cultures. It taught me adaptability, open-mindedness, and the understanding that there’s a vast and fascinating world beyond my own backyard.
Then, on the other hand, there was the magic of Chicago’s Broadway scene. From a young age, my family made it a point to experience countless musicals and plays. I can still feel the thrill of the lights dimming, the orchestra swelling, and the curtain rising to reveal a whole new world. I was captivated by the power of storytelling, the raw emotion conveyed through song and dance, and the sheer artistry of the performers. Whether it was the soaring melodies of a classic musical or the thought-provoking narrative of a play, these experiences ignited my imagination and nurtured a lifelong love for the performing arts.
In a way, these two seemingly disparate aspects of my childhood – global exploration and theatrical immersion – were deeply intertwined.
Both broadened my horizons, fostered empathy, and instilled in me a sense of wonder. They shaped the person I am today, fueling my curiosity about the world and my appreciation for creative expression. It wasn’t just seeing places or watching shows; it was about the connections I made, the emotions I felt, and the understanding that there are countless ways to experience and interpret the world around us. Those years were truly formative and hold an incredibly special place in my heart.
