Conversations with Kristen Fuller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Fuller.

Hi Kristen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have opened my practice as the third phase of a career in helping youth and families. My first career was as a high school teacher for 12 years, then as a corporate interventionist for our national public schools with Scholastic Inc. During Covid, I realized that it was time to get my psychology masters to become a mental health counselor. This was out of years of learning that the underlying issues with our youth and school challenges is mental health. I also went through a chronic illness episode with my teenage son that educated me on the importance of mental health care for those clients. I have been in practice for four years, and opened my private practice at a suite attached to a gym. My practice is rooted in a health approach that respects all the facets of health, mind body and spirit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not smooth, but it was blessed. My career path has moved in a trajectory that makes sense, from teaching to research/implementation of large scale school solutions to private practice. I had to go back to school at 52 for my masters, which felt like a step back to take steps forward. Along the way, I have had mentors and coworkers that have been critical to keep me moving on this rewarding journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an eclectic counselor, meaning I take many clients. I specialize in youth (11-18), young adult, marriages, midlife, and address all diagnoses. Some I refer out to specialists, such as severe addiction. I draw on my previous years in education as well as my training as a mental health counselor. I am known for being flexible with my approaches, to customize treatment for each client.

How do you define success?
Success is living your purposes on an optimal and continuously growing trajectory. I have experienced success in many ways. As an educator, interventionist, counselor, mother, wife, etc. My next goal is to work for success as a writer.
