Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelicia (Kalli) Taylor
Hi Kalli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started braiding hair when I was 12 years old in my hometown of Muskegon, MI, practicing on my four sisters and friends. In 2020, I moved to Greenville, SC, looking for new opportunities and a fresh start. Two years later, in 2022, I decided to turn my passion into a profession and launched KalliGirl Beauty, specializing in braids and locs.
Since then, I’ve been dedicated to perfecting my craft, growing my clientele, and expanding my business. I introduced a subscription service, collaborated with industry professionals like Nairobi Hair Care, and started developing my own online beauty supply store.
Now, I’m not just a stylist—I’m an entrepreneur. I’m building a beauty brand, refining my business strategy, and even creating content on social media about hair, business, family, and lifestyle. My journey is still unfolding, but I’m committed to growing my empire and inspiring others along the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape me into the entrepreneur I am today.
One of the biggest struggles was starting over when I moved to Greenville in 2020. I had to rebuild my network and establish myself in a new city where I didn’t have a client base. In the beginning, it was tough getting consistent bookings and proving myself in a competitive industry.
Another challenge has been navigating the business side of things. While I’ve always been passionate about hair, running a business—handling finances, marketing, and creating a solid business plan—has been a learning experience. I’ve had to figure out pricing, policies, and how to balance quality service with profitability.
On top of that, expanding beyond hairstyling into an online beauty supply store has been a whole new challenge. Finding the right vendors, managing costs, and making sure my brand stands out takes a lot of research and effort.
And of course, balancing all of this while being a mother and running a family is a challenge of its own. Time management is crucial, and some days feel overwhelming, but I remind myself why I started. I want to build something that not only supports my family but also inspires others to chase their dreams. Every setback has been a lesson, and I know the work I’m putting in now is laying the foundation for something greater.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the owner of KalliGirl Beauty, a braiding and locs business based in Greenville, SC. I specialize in creating high-quality, long-lasting styles that not only look good but also promote healthy hair. My clients come to me for everything from intricate braids to loc maintenance, and I take pride in providing a top-tier experience with attention to detail, professionalism, and a welcoming atmosphere.
What sets me apart is my focus on both artistry and client care. I’m not just about doing hair—I educate my clients on proper hair maintenance, offer subscription services to keep them on a consistent routine, and create a relaxing, luxury experience. I also stay up-to-date with new techniques and industry trends, always looking for ways to elevate my skills and services.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come in such a short time. From starting over in a new city to growing my business and now working on expanding into a beauty supply store, I’ve put in the work to turn my passion into something real. I love that I can make people feel more confident and beautiful, and I’m excited to keep building and evolving my brand.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I definitely haven’t done this alone, and I’m beyond grateful for the people who have supported me along the way.
First and foremost, my fiancé, Jeremy, has been my rock. He’s supported me through every stage of this journey, encouraging me to chase my dreams even when things got tough. My three children are also a huge part of my motivation—everything I do is to create a better future for them and show them that hard work and passion can turn dreams into reality.
My family has also played a big role. Growing up with four sisters, I always had people to practice on, and their encouragement helped build my confidence.
I’ve also been fortunate to have guidance from a few mentors at Paul Mitchell the school Greenville. Their expertise and insights have helped me refine my skills and understand the business side of the beauty industry.
And of course, my clients deserve a huge shoutout. Their loyalty, referrals, and trust in my work have been instrumental in helping me grow.
Lastly, I have to give credit to myself. I’ve put in the work, stayed consistent, and pushed through every challenge. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I know this is just the beginning.
