Today we’d like to introduce you to Joselyn Johnson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up I used to write little plays. As I got older I realized what I really enjoyed was orchestrating all of the moving parts that lead up to a major event, lesson or celebration. I always thought I would grow up to own a lounge or event space. But then I got a job in a leasing office for income based housing. The manager tasked me with planning a community resource event that would be a draw to the tentants and their families. It was then, after speaking to tenants about what they wanted to see that I realized I didn’t just want to host celebratory events but events that would make a difference.
I launched Eventions by Joselyn in 2016 with a passion for bringing people together and creating experiences that move people to action. What began as a love for helping others bring their ideas to life has evolved into a strategic event production and consulting firm specializing in meaningful experiences for nonprofits, community organizations, cultural institutions, and purpose-driven leaders.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve definitely hit some bumps in the road, but I’m grateful for every one of them because each challenge taught me something I needed in order to grow. One of my earliest obstacles was understanding the legal side of entrepreneurship. I knew I had an idea and a passion for what I wanted to create, but I couldn’t tell you the difference between an LLC, corporation, sole proprietorship, or any of the other business structures. I also didn’t realize how attainable entrepreneurship was, so I procrastinated—and as a result, I operated on a much smaller scale than I do today for the first three years.
Looking back, though, those three years were incredibly valuable. They gave me the space to learn, build relationships, and, most importantly, discover the deeper community impact work that would become the foundation of my business. What initially felt like a slow start ultimately helped me identify what truly sets Eventions by Joselyn apart: I’m not simply creating events; I’m creating experiences that bring people together, strengthen communities, and create meaningful impact. That clarity has shaped the work I do today and the way I approach every event I produce.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Eventions by Joselyn is a strategic event production and community impact company specializing in creating meaningful experiences that bring people, organizations, and communities together. I work primarily with nonprofits, community organizations, cultural institutions, and mission-driven leaders to develop and produce events that are not only well-executed, but also aligned with a larger purpose.
My work spans event strategy and consulting, event production and operations, community and cultural events, conferences and summits, nonprofit events, and community engagement experiences. Whether I’m producing a large-scale celebration like the Juneteenth Family Fest or helping an organization bring its mission to life through a conference, fundraiser, or community gathering, I’m always thinking beyond the event itself. I ask: What do we want people to feel, what do we want them to remember, and what do we want to happen because this event took place?
I’m probably best known for creating events that feel intentional, welcoming, culturally relevant, and deeply connected to the community. I have a particular passion for creating spaces where people can celebrate who they are, learn something new, build relationships, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
What I’m most proud of is the impact that has grown from the work. Eventions by Joselyn has evolved from an event planning company into a platform for creating experiences that inspire connection and contribute to something bigger. That evolution also led to the creation of the Eventions Impact Initiative, our nonprofit arm focused on giving back to the communities we serve.
I believe what sets me apart is that I don’t see an event as simply a date on a calendar or a production to execute. I see it as an opportunity to tell a story, build community, amplify a mission, and create lasting impact. My job is to bring the strategy, creativity, logistics, and relationships together so that my clients can focus on their mission while I focus on creating an experience that moves people.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Every entrepreneur needs a mentor—and in my case, I have three! LOL. I’ve learned that mentorship can look different at different stages of your journey. Some mentors may be seasonal, helping you navigate a specific season or challenge, while others become lifelong voices of wisdom and support. Both are valuable, and both can play an important role in your growth.
When looking for a mentor, I encourage entrepreneurs not to only seek out people who will encourage them, but also people who will challenge them to think beyond what they currently see for themselves and their business. My mentors hold me accountable not only to my business goals, but to my personal goals and, perhaps just as importantly, to taking care of myself. They remind me that rest, reflection, and recharging are also part of the work.
The right mentor won’t simply tell you what you want to hear—they’ll help you see what you may not be able to see for yourself and push you toward becoming the entrepreneur you’re capable of becoming.
