Conversations with Jason “Lil’ Round” Osborn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason “Lil’ Round” Osborn.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been creating since childhood. If it wasn’t art, it was music or a costume.

Ive always known I was going to have tattoos, the first tattoo I can remember seeing was on my Grandfather and I was hooked. I never thought I would be the one giving the tattoos.

As far as painting goes. I have always been drawn to the look and textures of oil painting but like many others I was intimidated by it. With the encouragement of my wife I started lessons during the pandemic shut down. And now I have another artistic outlet, I love the freedom I have with oil painting being able to achieve an image with loose brush strokes and no permanent result. If I paint it wrong just do it again.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, nothing was easy. I’ve worked very hard, at some times two jobs and exhausting hours. But it’s not been as difficult as some have had to endure. I’ve been blessed to have a supportive wife, wonderful mentors and friends who have helped me a long the way. As well as amazing clients who allow me to create for them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I enjoy tattooing most styles. I would say my style is mostly illustrative when it comes to tattoos.

For painting I enjoy portraits I love finding the unusual color that is there and using a minimal pallet and loose expressive brush strokes to create someone’s likeness.

I am most proud that my clients leave happy with the art and with the experience of working with me. No one wants to have a permanent reminder of an awful time they spent with an artist.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I do have to take risks. Just starting tattooing was a risk. It wasn’t like it is now, none of my family thought it was a good idea at first. It took a long time to get to where I started making any kind of money. I’ve also moved to new cities and had to build clientele all over again. I am originally from Michigan and left there for Charleston, South Carolina when tattooing became legal. That was a huge risk but it worked out great. And now I’m traveling and starting a new artistic path of oil painting as well as tattooing.

Taking risks is never comfortable for me, I hate it. You can’t grow if you stay in your comfort zone all the time.
