Conversations with Emily Unruh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Unruh

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For years my close friends had encouraged me to start an Instagram blog. I was hesitant because I thought ,”Who really cares what I have to share? Instagram is saturated with women who are much more stylish than me.”
But in 2023, I finally listened and started sharing my outfits on What Emily Bought. I was surprised to find that not only did people really care about what I had to say, but they actually found my content useful and relatable. It has turned into a creative hobby that has brought me a lot of joy and new friends over the last year.

Since then, What Emily Bought has evolved into sharing more than my daily outfits. I post my favorite products, mini vlogs, styling tips and tricks, and my weekly “Joy Reports” which is a photo dump of little things that brought me joy throughout the week.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At first, my biggest challenge was trying not to feel cringy or silly for posting. I’m sure there are people who hate follow me and make fun of my content, but now I don’t care about that.

The biggest challenge now is finding time to create and edit content between my regular 9-5 job and other life responsibilities. I keep a running list of ideas, and fit in content creation whenever I can.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work as a credit analyst at Southern First Bank in South Carolina. I’ve always been a numbers person, so I enjoy my job. My coworkers are fun, even though they (lovingly) tease me about my Instagram page and my outfit checks.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned that even though social media is saturated with content creators, each person has a unique perspective to bring. Someone out there will relate to your content.

And you don’t have to have a huge following to make an impact or have influence. I only have 2k followers, but I feel so close to my audience and love the engagement and feedback they’ve given me. It makes my day when I get a message that says “I used this tip you posted!” or “I copied your outfit of the day!”
