Ellie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with photography started 8 years ago. Along with my husband, we decided to open a real estate photography business, Skyline Photography, to help local businesses and realtors with their marketing materials and online presence. The company grew quickly and today is one of the leading real estate photography companies in South Carolina.
While I enjoyed photographing real estate, I always felt more drawn to working with people and capturing real emotions and connections. That’s how Ellie K Photography was born – a company focused on genuine moments and meaningful memories. Today, I specialize in newborn, family, and wedding photography, capturing the milestones people never want to forget.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. One of the biggest challenges was starting Ellie K Photography from scratch and building a name for myself in a very competitive industry. Photography is not just about taking good photos -it’s also communication, marketing, editing, client experience, and learning how to run a business.
Another challenge was finding my own style and direction as a photographer. Over time, I realized I was most passionate about working with people and capturing real emotions and meaningful stages of life. That’s what pushed me toward newborn, family, and wedding photography.
Balancing business and family life has also been a learning experience, especially as a mother of four. There were definitely moments of exhaustion and self-doubt, but those experiences also shaped the way I approach my work. They helped me better understand the importance of preserving genuine connection and memories for other families.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer specializing in newborn, family, and wedding photography, with a strong focus on genuine emotion and human connection. My goal is to create images that feel timeless and personal.
What I’m most proud of is building Ellie K Photography into a brand that people trust with some of the most important moments in their lives. As a mother of four myself, I understand how quickly life changes, and I think that perspective deeply influences the way I approach photography. I want my clients not only to receive beautiful images, but also to enjoy the experience itself and feel comfortable, seen, and cared for throughout the session.
What sets me apart is the balance between technical skill and emotional storytelling. Along with portrait photography, I also spent years building and operating a successful photography business in another industry, which taught me professionalism, consistency, communication, and how to create a strong client experience from beginning to end. At the same time, I approach every session with creativity and a very personal touch, making sure each gallery feels authentic to the people in it.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve learned that growth usually comes with some level of risk. For me, the biggest risks were the moments when I chose to trust my instincts and move in a direction that felt meaningful, even without guarantees.
Photography is a very competitive field, and building a business around creativity can feel uncertain at times. There were moments where I had to invest time, money, and energy into something before knowing if it would succeed. But I believe that if you stay consistent, keep improving, and genuinely care about your work, those risks become opportunities.
I also think risk-taking looks different for everyone. Sometimes it’s starting a business, changing direction creatively, or simply putting your work out into the world and being open to failure and growth. For me, the most important thing is being willing to evolve instead of staying comfortable.
