Conversations with Donald Barbour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donald Barbour.

Hi Donald, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up most of my life in Southwest Virginia where I met my wife, Nicole and where we started our family with Ellie and Grant. After nearly 15 years in education, my family and I moved from VA to the Upstate of SC when Nicole got a job opportunity with GE Vernova, and where I began a career in Real Estate in January 2015. It was a big change and challenge in starting not just a new career, but also a career in an area where I knew less than five people. I joined Keller Williams Greenville Upstate in 2015, became part of the J. Michael Manley Team in 2016, and then went back to being an independent Realtor in 2023. During that time I grew enough professionally to serve on their leadership committee for 3 years and occasionally taught classes in real estate. I then joined Nest Realty in April of 2026 to continue my growth and presence within the community and profession, and to serve my clients at even a higher level. Over the years I’ve built up a strong social media presence which has helped my business grow. During the pandemic I created Food Trucks of Greenville, Greenville Bourbon & Whiskey Society, and Greenville Backyard BBQ Club, as well as a member and admin of the local Virginia Tech Palmetto Chapter alumni group. Along the way I built a passion for supporting organizations such Greenville Shriners Hospital, the Mosaic Ministry at Grace Church, and the local American Cancer Association to name a few. I’ve built some amazing friendships and partnerships over the past 10 years, and love showcasing the Upstate and my new hometown of Simpsonville.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The obstacles I faced getting into real estate was that I was at a huge disadvantage in living in an area where I knew hardly anyone and starting a brand new career. I knew that in order to survive, I had to get out and network with others. I had to follow up quickly with leads. I had to find ways to excel and differentiate myself from others. Our profession has at least a 70% attrition rate of drop outs after year one and around 80% in the first two years. I was determined to not be in that statistic. I learned to ask questions, take as many classes as I could, attended conferences, and to have a strong social media presence.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in helping Buyers and Sellers build wealth through real estate. What sets me apart from others is my commitment to create a win-win strategy for all involved and to maintain a smooth process through the initial consultation through the closing process and beyond. It’s highly important to set expectations up front. Following up is key after the transaction to continue adding value to your past clients. Also, I believe in giving to the community through donating part of each commission and supporting local causes.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Some of the risks I’ve taken over the past 11 years would to move from a salaried career with benefits into a career that’s solely commission based. Also, I had to take risks in going from a team back to an independent agent, and also switching brokerages. All required a lot of faith and determination. You have to take risks and get outside your comfort zone in order to grow. The challenges of each risk taken were well worth it.
