Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Smith.
Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Angel Pets in Pawleys Island back in 2007! What a crazy first couple of years that was, as we went through the huge housing crash and bad economy! Having to move shops due to personal issues we moved into a kennel and rented space to groom out of. That kennel started going downhill so we had to move again. This time into a small office space in Litchfield! When there was an issue with a neighbor who didn’t like the sounds of the dryers and pups so they went to the board and had the business reviewed and we were given 30 days in 2014 to move again! This time we took a chance and found a great little spot in Murrells Inlet! It was here we found our home! We have grown leaps and bounds expanding into the whole building as we grew with the support of the community and amazing staff that became family! Now we have a cats only boarding and grooming facility, a dog grooming facility with separate bathing and drying areas for the pups! We are always looking for waysbto help the community. We now host clinics for pet dentals and vaccines! We work with local rescues and are currently adding a community pet food pantry and sponsoring and hosting a microchip scanning station from The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Adding 2 beautiful children in between all of life’s crazy turns including having to move multiple times over the years. Learning what it meant to be a business owner and keeping up with the growing industry, Angel Pets only survived the struggles because of our loyal pet parents, community and families that believed in us!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are professional dog and cat groomers and pet care providers. We take regular opportunities to keep learning new and better ways to care for the furry family members of our communities. From haircuts to creative grooms and color! Dogs. Cats, Puppies and kittens! And just this year have added services for other small family pets such as bunnies, birds, bearded dragons, guinea pigs and hamsters!!! We love what we do and it shows in our work!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Every small business owner is a risk taker! Not only for the fact that we have no choice but to make it work for our families but those of us who have employees, those families depend on us to care for their families! Not to mention working with animals, thats always a risk. I had an unfortunate event where a dog bit my right hand so badly, I was not sure id ever be able to groom again! Here I am 2 years later and I may do things a little differently but I am so glad to be back at my grooming table with these pets.
