Conversations with ChoirBoi Cam

Today we’d like to introduce you to ChoirBoi Cam.

Hi ChoirBoi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My full name is Cameron Owens, but most people know me as ChoirBoi Cam — a passionate voice in gospel music and ministry. I was born on October 17, 1998, and raised in a small town called Pelzer, South Carolina. Honestly, my story is nothing short of a miracle.

From day one, the odds were stacked against me. I was born prematurely and diagnosed with “failure to thrive.” Doctors told my family I’d never walk or talk. I had severe sensory issues — sounds, lights, and colors overwhelmed me. I had to undergo years of physical, occupational, and speech therapy just to reach the basic milestones most people take for granted.

But by the grace of God, I didn’t just walk — I ran. Literally. I became a student-athlete and one of the fastest high school runners in South Carolina. What the enemy meant for harm, God used as a testimony.

I went on to attend Anderson University on a combination of athletic, academic, and arts scholarships. There, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Health Care Administration, and later completed a Master’s in Human Resources. Even while juggling sports and academics, I stayed rooted in my faith and fully committed to music and ministry.

Music has been a part of me from the beginning. I started singing in church with my family as a child. By my early teens, I became known as ChoirBoi Cam — writing, recording, and touring. My debut album War Zone dropped in 2014, followed by The Destiny Project in 2016, and Growing Pains in 2019, which debuted in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Gospel Albums Chart.

Since then, I’ve used my platform to speak out against bullying and starred in the Now Network reality series More Than Music. I’ve been blessed to receive award recognition, including a Stellar Award nomination, but for me, it’s always been about the message over the spotlight.

My latest single, Replay, brought something fresh to the gospel world — debuting at the top of the iTunes charts, climbing to #1 on the TSA African Radio Charts, and earning a nomination and win for a Carolina Music Video Award. With its futuristic sound and eternal message, Replay is a reminder that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Outside of music, I serve as the National Pastor of Greater Grace Global — a fellowship of churches across the United States. I’m also honored to serve as a worship leader in my local church. And perhaps one of my greatest blessings yet — I am now a husband, walking alongside my beautiful wife in purpose and partnership. Together, we are building a life grounded in faith, love, and legacy.

I was raised in a single-parent home. I overcame early health and learning challenges. And yet here I stand — proof that no matter where you start, God can take your life and turn it into something extraordinary.

My mission is clear: to awaken a generation to their God-given purpose and to raise up leaders who will impact the world for Christ.

I’m ChoirBoi Cam — husband, pastor, artist, overcomer — and this is just the beginning.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like anything worth having, this journey of purpose and triumph hasn’t come without obstacles. As I mentioned before, the road was never smooth — but it was always sacred. What made the difference for me, though, was the support system that surrounded me. I didn’t walk this path alone.

My mother, a true warrior, raised us as a single parent. But what many don’t know is that she spent a large portion of our lives battling serious health challenges. There were seasons where she had to completely relearn how to walk and talk — not once, but multiple times. I remember being in high school and literally having to carry her on our backs just to help her get where she needed to go. That wasn’t just physical — that was spiritual training in real time.

Some people say those experiences forced us to grow up too fast. And maybe in some ways, they did. But for me, they became undeniable proof of just how strong and faithful God truly is. Watching my mother fight to live, watching God restore her again and again — it showed me that no situation is too far gone for Him to turn around.

What looked like brokenness became a blessing. What felt like weight became worship. That kind of struggle taught me early on that strength doesn’t always look like having it all together — sometimes, it looks like surrender. Sometimes, it looks like carrying someone you love until they can stand again.

And through it all, God never failed us. Not once.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a gospel and contemporary Christian recording artist, known professionally as ChoirBoi Cam. My music blends traditional gospel harmonies, worship elements, and hip-hop rhythms—crafted to uplift, heal, and share the powerful message of God’s love and purpose for our lives.

I specialize in songwriting and performance that honestly reflect real-life struggles and spiritual growth. Whether it’s exploring grace in moments of doubt like in “Inconsistency,” declaring the faith to move mountains in “Mountains,” or encouraging listeners to reclaim their calling through “Taking It Back,” my songs come from a deeply personal place of testimony and hope.

One of the proudest moments of my career came in 2019 with the release of my full-length album Growing Pains. The album debuted at #9 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and also made appearances on the Heatseekers and Independent Albums charts—proof that my message was resonating far beyond the church walls.

More recently, in 2024, I released the single “Replay,” a bold declaration of God’s unwavering grace and restoration. This song marked a major milestone for me, debuting at #1 on the charts in Africa—my first international chart-topping success. Knowing my music is reaching listeners across continents is incredibly humbling and fuels my passion to keep creating.

What sets me apart is a unique combination of sound and story. I began singing and writing in church as a teenager and released my debut album War Zone at just 15 years old. Building my career independently, I’m driven by a calling to be a voice of encouragement and authenticity. My journey has included overcoming personal challenges and advocating for mental health and anti-bullying awareness—experiences that continue to shape every lyric I write and every performance I give.

At my core, I’m a storyteller. I use music not merely to entertain, but to minister, heal, and remind people that God still speaks, even in the noise and chaos of life.

Beyond music, I’m also an author—I published my first book, Rise to the Occasion, in 2020. I’m passionate about fashion and entrepreneurship as well; I launched my clothing brand, Blesserd Swagger, several years ago and am currently preparing to introduce a new athletic apparel line soon. Additionally, I hold a degree in Human Resources and have accumulated valuable professional experience in the field. This year, I’m thrilled to be launching my own HR consulting business, dedicated to empowering nonprofits and small businesses by combining my expertise with my commitment to leadership and community impact.
