Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Hollifield.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always had a love for beautiful old things. I learned at an early age to appreciate the quality and history vintage and antique pieces hold. My great grandfather worked in fine furniture factories in the mountains of North Carolina. My father did upholstery work, so I came by my love for timeless quality easily. In the early 2000’s, I had the opportunity to buy my first store and this wild ride began. Shortly after opening my store, I began working at an auction house that was actually next to my store. . The knowledge I gained on top of what I already knew was immeasurable. I started an estate sale company in 2005, which is still in operation. I have spent the last 25 years collecting and selling treasures of all types. Once you have the itch for this, it never goes away. The hunt is a little harder these days as more young people fall in love with vintage. It’s a wonderful thing to see though. My current store The Vintage At Main is located in Downtown Greenville. I like to call it an eclectic curated mix. We primarily focus on vintage decor and furniture with some antique items. As well as highlighting local artists, and estate liquidations..
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road. I sell something that people may want but don’t really need. Economic ups and downs affect businesses like this probably a little more than others. Owning your own business is one of the most stressful yet most rewarding things you can do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have always worked where I can be creative. It’s not just about collecting and selling. It’s about knowing how to put it together and making it shine. The design aspect is a big part for me. My store is complemented often for having beautifully displayed pieces. It makes a difference in people wanting to come to see you. I am known for having a strong sense of color. Whether it’s in interior design or gardening, there has to be lots of color. I don’t really specialize in a specific period. I like to mix it all.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have always been a risk taker. I don’t think you can own your own business and not be. Doing this forces you to put a lot on the line. You have to be willing to accept that it may not work. If you do your research and know your market, the benefits will out weight the risks. I have never been a “what if” person. You do not know until you try.
