Today we’d like to introduce you to Asha Gilliam.
Hi Asha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story is really one of growth, resilience, and perspective.
I’m a single mother of two sons, Jaden and Jayce, and today I’m the CEO of Family First Financial Services, where I help individuals and families through bookkeeping, credit repair assistance, tax preparation, and financial education.
Like many people, I didn’t start out with entrepreneurship as my primary goal. I was focused on working, raising my children, and simply doing the best I could with the information I had at the time. Everything changed in 2018 when I experienced a near-death event that forced me to reevaluate my life.
That experience made me realize that none of us are promised tomorrow. It also made me confront the fact that I hadn’t adequately prepared for my sons’ future if something were to happen to me. From that moment forward, I have became much more intentional about learning about finances, wealth-building, business ownership, and creating a legacy.
What started as a personal journey of financial education evolved into a passion for helping others. I began creating resources, sharing information, publishing content, launching my podcast called Mommy Talks, even published a book, as well as building a business centered around helping families improve their financial situations.
Today, my mission is bigger than just providing services. It’s about helping mothers understand that financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and proper planning can change the trajectory of a family for generations. Every step of my journey—from being a single mom, to working rideshare, to running my business—has taught me that success isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes it’s built one lesson, one challenge, and one decision at a time.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that our greatest challenges can often become the catalyst for our greatest purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing entrepreneurship with being a single mother. When you’re responsible for raising children and providing for your family, there isn’t always room for mistakes. There were times when I had to work multiple streams of income, including rideshare, while simultaneously building my business and pursuing my long-term goals.
Another struggle was overcoming the emotional impact of the near-death experience I went through in 2018. That experience changed my perspective on life, but it also left me with reservations about being highly visible. As a business owner, you’re often expected to constantly put yourself out there, be on camera, and share your life publicly.
I’ve also faced many of the challenges that come with entrepreneurship in general—learning new skills, building credibility, finding clients, and staying motivated when results don’t happen overnight.
What has helped me push through is remembering why I started. Everything I do is centered around creating a better future for my sons and helping other families improve their financial situations. When your purpose is bigger than the obstacles, you find a way to keep moving forward.
Looking back, I wouldn’t say the road has been easy, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and helped shape the person and entrepreneur I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the CEO and founder of Family First Financial Services, where I provide bookkeeping services, credit repair assistance, tax preparation, tax planning, and financial education. My mission is to help individuals, families, and small business owners better understand their finances so they can make informed decisions and build a stronger future.
In addition to my financial services business, I create educational resources through my podcast, Mommy Talks, my blog, books, and other content focused on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and generational wealth. I am passionate about helping people learn how to improve their financial situations and create opportunities not only for themselves but for future generations as well.
What I am most proud of is building a business while raising my two sons, Jaden and Jayce, as a single mother. They are the driving force behind everything I do. I am also proud that my personal experiences—including a life-changing near-death experience in 2018—have allowed me to turn challenges into purpose and use what I’ve learned to help others.
What sets me apart is my genuine commitment to education and empowerment. I don’t just provide services; I strive to help people understand the “why” behind financial decisions so they can continue making informed choices long after our work together is complete. My approach is family-centered, practical, and focused on long-term impact. Whether I’m helping someone improve their credit, organize their finances, prepare their taxes, or start a business, my goal is always the same: to help them create a stronger foundation for themselves and their families.
At the end of the day, I believe financial literacy is one of the most powerful tools we can pass on, and I am committed to helping others use that knowledge to build lasting legacies.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is family, legacy, and making a positive impact on others.
As a single mother of two sons, Jaden and Jayce, my family is at the center of everything I do. Many of the decisions I’ve made throughout my personal and professional journey have been driven by my desire to create opportunities, stability, and a better future for them.
Beyond my immediate family, I am passionate about helping others improve their lives through financial education and entrepreneurship. I believe that knowledge is one of the most valuable things we can share because it has the power to change not only one person’s life, but the lives of future generations as well.
Ultimately, what matters most to me is creating a legacy of service, knowledge, and opportunity that will continue to benefit my family and community long after I’m gone.
