Today we’d like to introduce you to Alena Popova
Hi Alena, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My photography journey began with capturing precious moments of my now 16-year-old during his toddler years. When my second baby was born, I discovered my passion for newborn photography—and I never looked back. I have trained extensively in newborn posing and safety under some of the most respected photographers in the industry and remain committed to continuous learning and growth.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey of running a newborn photography business comes with its own set of challenges. Marketing effectively, standing out in a market filled with budget photographers, and ensuring that skills and expertise are properly valued can be difficult. Reaching the right audience takes time and strategy, and meeting Charleston’s licensing requirements adds another layer of responsibility.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in newborn photography, capturing the earliest and most precious moments of a baby’s life in a way that is timeless, warm, and beautifully styled. My work focuses on both posed and organic baby-led sessions, ensuring that every image reflects the baby’s unique personality while maintaining a soft, classic aesthetic. I’m also known for my colorful and bright cake smash sessions, as well as fine art and dramatic maternity photography.
What I’m most proud of is the trust families place in me to handle and photograph their newborns safely and beautifully. Every session is a chance to create lasting memories for families, and knowing that my work will be cherished for a lifetime is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my attention to detail, my unique approach to styling and color, and my deep understanding of newborn posing and safety. I continuously invest in professional training to refine my skills and ensure that every session is both safe and artistically crafted. My goal is to provide not just photos, but a full experience—one that leaves families feeling at ease and delighted with the final images.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, the newborn photography industry is likely to see a continued shift toward more natural, baby-led posing and lifestyle sessions, with an emphasis on authentic, emotive storytelling. While beautifully posed newborn portraits will always have a place, many parents are now seeking more organic, unposed moments that capture real connections.
