Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara York
Hi Tamara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Tamara York, a wife, mom, business owner, and proudly rooted in Charleston, SC. I’ve always had a deep passion for real estate, though I wasn’t initially sure what my path into the industry would be. Interestingly, my journey started in a completely different field—I was on the pre-med track, studying for the MCAT with the goal of becoming a pediatrician.
Everything shifted when I attended a homebuyer seminar hosted by a family friend/mortgage broker. I went simply to learn about homeownership, but I left with an entirely new perspective. That seminar sparked my curiosity, leading me to schedule a one-on-one meeting with her to discuss getting pre-approved for a home. However, instead of just walking away with mortgage options, I walked away with the roadmap to becoming a mortgage loan originator.
I quickly took action, studied for my licensing exam, and passed. That same family friend became my mentor, guiding me through the industry and providing hands-on training. Once I grasped the dynamics of the business, I hit the ground running—and I haven’t looked back since. Now, I’m proud owner of my own mortgage brokerage, York Superior Mortgage Group, helping others to achieve their homeownership/commercial dreams, just like I once set out to do for myself.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has been incredibly rewarding, but it hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been finding the right balance between perfecting my craft and managing the fast-paced nature of the business. In this industry, every client’s situation is unique, and I’ve had to continuously learn, adapt, and refine my approach—all while juggling the daily demands of new prospects, ongoing transactions, and continuously building my business.
Early on, there was a steep learning curve, from mastering guidelines and structuring deals to ensuring each client receives the best possible experience. At times, it felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day to focus on both growth and execution. However, through discipline, mentorship, and experience, I’ve learned to navigate those challenges more effectively. Every hurdle has only strengthened my ability to deliver exceptional service and build lasting relationships in the industry.
