Community Highlights: Meet Taemra of Mental Health and Wellness Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taemra.

Hi Taemra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am gratefully retiring this year with just over 27 years of Federal Government service. I have been working as a first responder in psychology and law enforcement since 1999. In 2014 to follow my passion, I began working on a goal to manage my own wellness and mental health business. Just as I was starting out, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I spent a couple of years overcoming this and, in the process, became a registered yoga teacher to help support my own recovery from surgeries and to support myself mentally. I have moved forward to add yoga as a part of my mental health and wellness business offering individual and corporate business-related services for mind and body health. I have made strides to become licensed not only in Florida to provide mental health services, but I can also now provide mental health services via telehealth in Michigan and North Carolina. I feel a passion to help individuals learn they can overcome challenging obstacles in life to live happier and healthier.

My motto since becoming a survivor of cancer is “May your smile be brighter than any obstacle you face.” I believe in my motto and attempt to offer my clients the passion I carry forward to gratefully be living and enjoying life today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overcoming cancer has been one of my biggest obstacles in life but also a huge gift. I have met some of the most wonderful individuals during my journey, and I work to pay it forward. I write for Cure Magazine off and on, and have training in oncology yoga. Cure Magazine is the largest oncology magazine in the United States and Canada and is free for patients and their caregivers. I will soon also offer free online yoga by working with the Christinia Phipps Foundation to support oncology yoga classes for individuals needing support with their oncology journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I graduated from Michigan State University in 1995 and interned with the University of Michigan and West Florida Regional Medical Center. I gained incredible experience and have gone on to train in substance abuse counseling and have a background in rehabilitation counseling along with being a licensed mental health provider. I now look forward to providing support for law enforcement personnel along with the general public through my own private practice. I have been told by clients I work well in helping individuals with chronic illness, major life transitions, and in managing anxiety and depression as well as trauma. I am trained in EMDR which is an eye movement desensitization therapy. EMDR helps individuals overcome trauma in a manner that is not traditional talk therapy. I accept most major insurance and private pay for services. I attempt to also offer varied hours to help individuals who work by offering select Sunday appointments and evening hours in addition to daytime availability. I take pride in offering a holistic approach to healing and mind body wellness.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Helping the world be a better and kinder place is important to me. I was asked growing up to try to leave something better than the manner I may have found it. The challenge in life is how to leave that mark.
