Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Lowe.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Hibachi Heroes are a harmonica powered funk/rock band, formed in Charleston, SC in 2012.
Our music spans a variety of genres, including funk-rock, psychedelic rock, folk rock, soul,
and Southern rock. We’re
known for upbeat, fun, ‘jamming’ with extensive improvisation, but
enough pop sensibility to keep an audience’s attention captivated.
One of our coolest accomplishments was when we opened for Blues Traveler at the Charleston Music Hall. Most recently we were recognized as the Best Musical Group and Rob won Best Individual Musician by The Daniel Island News’s “Best of” awards. When we are not
opening for Grammy award winning artists, we can be found all over the Charleston area.
The group is fronted by local D-level celebrity Rob Lowe (vocals/harmonica) and Chris Oplinger
(vocals/guitar). Holding down the rhythm section is the extremely virile Chris Milligan and Columbian
bassist Wash (just Wash)
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We are a cursed band. It’s almost like the movie Spinal Tap and their drummers:. Life imitates Art imitates Life.
We’ve lost 2 guitar players due to untimely deaths. One due to depression. Literally woke up one day and found out he committed suicide. We had no idea he was struggling. Another due to complications from a well documented car accident. 2 other guitar players moved to Greenville. Which is good for them. Life takes you down different roads and we’re happy for them. It’s hard enough to keep a band together, but our circumstances somewhat take the cake. There have also been a couple other bass players, drummers, and a piano player who have left the band. But for the most part the rhythm section has remained steady.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Hibachi Heroes. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a harmonica powered funk rock band. We dare to play original music and cover songs that while you will recognize them, 90% of the covers we play are too hard, too complicated for most bands to just throw together. We rehearse and put on a unique show that you just can’t find in Charleston. It starts with the harmonica. Rob covers fiddle lines, horn lines and musical intervals and expression that a guitar (or most harmonica players did that matter) just can’t do.
We blend and segue songs together. We have a 23 minute 90’s rap MashUp medley. It’s insane.
The downside is no one can just sub in our band. If any one of us 4 (drums, guitar, bass, harmonica) can’t make a show, then we can’t play. No one wants to “understudy” our band. It’s just too hard!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Other than our terrible luck with our lineup?
We’re not that good at social media marketing. Breaking through the noise is tough. Or original songs are great. Enough pop sensibility to engage listeners, and lyrics that mean something.
