Community Highlights: Meet Neil Chris of Comic Life Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neil Chris

Hi Neil, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started when I moved to Savannah from Puerto Rico after the global pandemic. Before I became a comedian I was a full time musician but, during the pandemic music became nonessential so I had to make a choice and decided to move to the states for better career opportunities. After a few months living in Savannah, I was down and sort of depressed because of my current living situation, my quality of life was not the best since I moved and I felt a lose of purpose. I had lost my passion for music but, one night I stumbled into a club in basement called Totally Awesome Bar and they had an open mic comedy show. Ive always loved comedy however, in Puerto Rico when I was growing up back in the 90’s it’s customary to heckle even well established comedians and I really didn’t want to expose myself to heavy public bullying so I turned to music and become successful at it. I noticed how in the states comedy is respected so I decided to give it a try, I got some laughs so I kept coming back to it, it set me free, gave me a sense of community, I started doing comedy in other states and just getting better at it and it took me out of my depression. Now moving to Charleston, I noticed that Charleston didn’t have many open mics for up and coming comedians so I decided to create Comic Life where I produce as many open mic shows for comics to have that safe space to practice their craft and maybe even get a chance to save a life just like comedy saved mine and give back to the community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Comedy is not easy. They say to be a good comedian you need to be in it for 10+ years. However I’ve been blessed with opportunities and also have had some set backs and gate keepers that every comic has to deal with along the journey but, as long as you are good at what you do and love what you do then everything else just turns out good, its all part of the process and you just need to go through it and be consistent, you are always going to struggle so why not get comfortable in the struggle, right? Another I’ve learned to try to be careful with is that comedy is subjective so, what might be funny to some might be offensive to another person, thats sort of the hard part of comedy, navigating through the words without triggering anyone. Every comedian has a different take on this, my take is that all jokes work every where, you just have to know how to deliver your joke, theres so many people from different walks of life that its up to me the comic to bring them all together in that moment I am on stage. Its important to establish a connection between me and the audience because that will determine if I have a good set that night or I flat out bomb. Comedy is hard however, I’m lucky enough to have a group of talented people preforming at my shows. I an extremely grateful for the ongoing support of everyone that has preformed or have attended all of the shows Comic Life has produced this last year which was a total of 34 shows! Comic Life will continue the ongoing struggle to create memorable moments of laughter and fun for years to come.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Comic Life Productions ?
Comic Life Productions is a production company thats main focus is producing high quality comedy shows mainly in Charleston SC and Savannah GA. We have only been around for a year and its just amazing the amount of support we have gotten from all the comics from the low country. Our goal is to help up and coming comics learn the ins and outs of comedy because there is no real school for stand up comedy, usually a comedian has to learn things on their own and just figure it out on their own so our job at Comic Life is to serve as a guide and help all comedians of all experience levels get to where they want to go, be it by putting them on one of our shows or helping them with the fundamentals of joke writing… anything we can do to help make that comics life easier, if its within our reach we’ll do it! We currently have shows for comics that visit us from all over the low country. Our goal is to host at least 1 show a night but, for now we have a show every Tuesday at Cedar Creek Tavern starting at 9pm and every Friday at Highscore Brewing at 7pm.
