Community Highlights: Meet Mindy Nicodemus of Off the Grid Accounting LLP

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Nicodemus.

Hi Mindy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story began long before Off The Grid Accounting LLP.
I grew up on Lake Wateree in South Carolina, where life was simple, hard work was expected, and neighbors looked after one another. Those small-town values shaped who I am today and continue to influence how I run my business.
My professional journey has never followed a straight line. Over the years, I worked in advertising, public relations, publishing, nursing, construction operations, business management, and accounting. Every chapter taught me something valuable about entrepreneurship, communication, leadership, and the realities of running a business, but doing it as someone who genuinely loves others and has always just wanted to help others grow their businesses to access the FREEDOM, of the AMERICAN DREAM!

In 2014, I started Off The Grid Magazine with just $1.17, a dream, and a whole lot of faith. Our very first mailing address was the Liberty Hill Post Office on Lake Wateree. We had no investors, no office building, and no startup funding. What we did have was determination, community support, and a belief that anything was possible with enough hard work and faith.
Within our first week, the magazine generated more than $3,000 in advertising sales. That small beginning eventually grew into Off The Grid Communications and laid the foundation for everything that would come later.
As life evolved, so did my career. I spent years working alongside builders, contractors, and small business owners, learning firsthand how businesses operate behind the scenes. I became deeply involved in bookkeeping, payroll, licensing, compliance, project management, and financial operations. Over time, I realized that many small business owners were incredibly talented at their trade but struggled with the financial side of running a business.
That realization inspired the creation of Off The Grid Accounting LLP.
In 2025, my daughter Lillian and I officially launched our accounting firm together. We built the company around a simple mission: helping small business owners understand their numbers, stay compliant, and gain peace of mind. We wanted to create a business where clients felt supported, not judged, regardless of how far behind they might be.
The road hasn’t always been easy. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve experienced personal loss, financial challenges, career transitions, and moments of uncertainty. There were seasons when I questioned my direction and wondered what was next. But looking back, I can see that every challenge was preparing me for the work I do today.
One of the biggest turning points came in March of this year, when I made the decision to fully step into entrepreneurship and trust the path God was placing in front of me. Since then, opportunities have appeared that I could never have planned myself. New clients arrived at exactly the right time, our business began to grow, and doors started opening that once seemed impossible.
Today, Off The Grid Accounting LLP continues to grow, and we are preparing for an exciting new chapter with a new office, new clients, and a vision for the future. What started with a small-town dream, a post office box, and $1.17 has become a growing family business built on faith, service, and the belief that success is measured not only by profit, but by the people you help along the way.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change the journey. Every chapter, every challenge, and every leap of faith helped shape the person and business owner I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not.
Like most entrepreneurs, my journey has been filled with setbacks, uncertainty, and moments when quitting would have been easier than continuing, with my Faith in God and a whole lot of prayer, and Great Clients all along the way, is the only reason I am where I am today.
One of the biggest challenges was rebuilding after personal loss. In February 2024, I lost someone very important to me, and for a while I lost part of myself too. Grief has a way of affecting every area of your life, including your motivation, confidence, and ability to see a clear path forward.
At the same time, I was trying to navigate career changes, financial pressures, and the realities of building a business from the ground up. There were days when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions and whether I had what it took to succeed.
Like many small business owners, I have also experienced the challenge of starting with limited resources. Off The Grid’s story didn’t begin with investors or large amounts of capital. It began with faith, hard work, determination, and a willingness to keep moving forward even when the future was uncertain.
One of the most difficult decisions I ever made was leaving the security of a steady paycheck to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. It was scary, and there were many moments when I didn’t know how everything would work out. But looking back, those leaps of faith became turning points in my life and business.
Thankfully, I haven’t walked the journey alone. My daughter, Lillian, became my business partner, and together we have built Off The Grid Accounting LLP one client at a time. Having her by my side has been one of the greatest blessings of this journey. We both have different strengths and make an excellent team because of it.
The road has definitely not been smooth, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. The struggles strengthened my faith, increased my resilience, and helped me better understand the clients we serve every day.
Today, when a client feels overwhelmed, behind, or unsure where to start, I can honestly say, “I’ve been there too.” And that perspective has become one of the greatest strengths of our business.

We’ve been impressed with Off the Grid Accounting LLP , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Off The Grid Accounting LLP is a family-owned accounting and bookkeeping firm based in Coastal South Carolina, founded by a mother-and-daughter team with a passion for helping small business owners succeed.

We specialize in bookkeeping, catch-up and clean-up accounting, payroll services, sales tax compliance, business formation, QuickBooks setup, financial reporting, tax preparation, and ongoing business support. Our clients include contractors, construction companies, auto repair and custom shops, restaurants, service-based businesses, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs throughout the Carolinas and beyond.

One area where we have developed a strong reputation is helping business owners who feel overwhelmed by their finances. Many of our clients come to us months—or even years—behind on bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax filings, or tax returns. Instead of judging them, we help them create a plan, get organized, become compliant, and move forward with confidence.

What sets us apart is that we understand the reality of small business ownership because we have lived it ourselves. We know what it feels like to wear multiple hats, worry about payroll, manage cash flow, and make difficult decisions while trying to grow a company. Our goal is to be more than accountants—we strive to be trusted advisors and partners in our clients’ success.

Our firm was built on relationships, not transactions. We believe every client deserves personal attention, honest communication, and practical solutions that make sense for their business. We take the time to explain financial information in plain English so business owners can understand their numbers and make informed decisions.

One of the things we are most proud of is the story behind our brand. Off The Grid began in 2014 as a small publication on the shores of Lake Wateree (A very “Off the Grid place to live) with just $1.17 and a dream. Over the years, that dream evolved into a growing accounting firm built on faith, hard work, perseverance, and family. Off the Grid isn’t just a name, it is a brand, a brand that tells business owners that just like Jesus, we will meet you where you are. We will go off the beaten path to help you! Off the Grid isn’t sitting in a traditional office all of the time, it is going to the construction site to sign paperwork, going to the coffee shop to meet a client, going to the motorcycle dealership to sit with the owner at his desk for a few hours when needed to teach us both things about cost accounting or even advertising.

Today, Off The Grid Accounting LLP continues to grow, but our mission remains simple: help small business owners gain clarity, confidence, and peace of mind through better financial management and popping in some marketing if needed.

We want readers to know that no matter how far behind you are, no matter how complicated your situation may seem, and no matter where you are in your business journey, there is always a path forward. Sometimes all it takes is the right team standing beside you.

At Off The Grid Accounting, we are honored to be that team.

What are your plans for the future?
The future is incredibly exciting for us because we feel like we are just getting started.

One of the biggest changes happening right now is that Off The Grid Accounting LLP is moving into a newly remodeled office space that will allow us to better serve our clients and continue growing our business. We are also preparing to move into a new home that represents a major personal and professional milestone for our family.

As a mother-and-daughter team, one of our biggest goals is to continue building a business that creates long-term stability, freedom, and opportunities for future generations. We are focused on growing our recurring client base, expanding our bookkeeping and accounting services, and becoming a trusted resource for small business owners throughout the Carolinas and beyond.

We are especially passionate about helping contractors, tradesmen, service businesses, restaurants, and entrepreneurs who need guidance navigating the financial side of business ownership. Our goal is to continue creating simple, practical solutions that help business owners spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time doing what they love.

Long term, we hope to grow Off The Grid Accounting into a firm known not only for technical expertise, but for genuine relationships, integrity, and exceptional client service. We want clients to feel like they have a trusted partner in their corner who truly cares about their success.

Personally, I am also continuing my education while working toward becoming an Enrolled Agent. Lifelong learning is important to me, and I believe investing in knowledge allows us to better serve our clients.

Most importantly, we want to continue building a business that honors the values it was founded on: faith, family, hard work, honesty, and service. If the last few years have taught me anything, it’s that some of the greatest blessings arrive when you take a leap of faith and trust the journey.

The future is bright, and we’re looking forward to helping more business owners succeed while continuing to write the next chapter of the Off The Grid story.
