Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Bowen.
Lindsey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was working as a Marketing and Social Media Director at a local company and had been tasked with hiring a part time intern. John came in for an interview and admitted he had zero experience but was willing to learn. I guess I just had a feeling about him and decided to give him a chance.
I taught John everything I know but found myself learning just as much from him as he did from me. He has a knack for understanding the psychology of what people want and how to deliver it. While I’m more skilled on the creative side, John is a numbers guy and quickly began to dig into the analytics of not only the brand we were working on, but also our competitors. He used this information to forge a strategic plan of explosive growth.
After 3 months, John was hired as my full time marketing assistant. Our complementary skills and similar drive formed a dream team, consistently crushing goals and exceeding expectations.
After years of tossing around the idea of starting our own company (we used to joke that we’d call it J + L Marketing), we decided in 2024 the time had come to officially form BOCO Creative Agency.
As the unofficial masters of Spartanburg and Greenville local small business marketing, it only seemed natural to make it official. Our partnership is fueled by a shared passion to see small businesses and our communities thrive.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We both are first and foremost full time parents. John has 2 kids and I have 3. Our biggest struggle is balancing our work life and home life. We don’t want to neglect either, and we give 110% to everything we do. It’s been a learning process, but we have made it work. We’re committed to serving our clients without neglecting our children who are so important to us.
As you know, we’re big fans of BOCO Creative Agency. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
BOCO Creative is a fully remote design and branding agency. We specialize in web design, graphic design, branding, and photography/videography.
What sets us apart is we are completely self taught. We both have degrees in other areas, but never felt like we had stepped into our full potential and passion until we entered the world of marketing.
Before BOCO, John launched a grassroots community initiative called Operation Grow Spartanburg, which has grown into a wildly successful movement. Over the past year, BOCO has stepped in as an official sponsor and partner. We’ve helped with strategizing, designing, and branding OGS into a fully independent, sustainable business. Now, by formally joining forces, BOCO and OGS can amplify each other’s impact while doing what we care about most: uplifting our community and helping local small businesses thrive.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’d say we are both cautious risk takers. We are fiscally conservative while understanding you won’t make it far without taking risks. I’d say the biggest risk of all for us was just starting. With very little cash up front and zero clients, it was a scary leap to make, but I’m so proud of us for having the guts to go for it and for doing as well as we have in our first year.
