Today we’d like to introduce you to Leyly Bagherof.
Hi Leyly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sun and Soil Plant Parlor began with a simple belief: that houseplants can cultivate more than just greenery—they can cultivate joy, mindfulness, and connection. What started as a small, passion-driven venture has grown into a thriving community space centered around intentional living and personal growth.
I opened Sun and Soil with the goal of creating a houseplant shop that felt approachable, welcoming, and inspiring—even to those with no prior plant knowledge. Over time, the shop has evolved into so much more than a retail space. It’s now a place where people come to connect, create, and celebrate. Whether it’s through our terrarium bar, dog breed meet-ups, or unique events like Plants and Pilates or meditation mornings, we’ve focused on fostering experiences that bring people together and help them grow—literally and figuratively.
One of our core values is excellent customer service, and we’ve worked hard to create an environment where everyone feels seen and supported. From day one, I’ve prioritized community, and that focus has guided every decision—from partnering with local chefs for pop-up dinners to exploring ways to support other female-owned businesses.
The journey hasn’t been without challenges—navigating major setbacks like construction delays, storm-related closures, and unexpected costs has tested both my resilience and resourcefulness. But each obstacle has ultimately helped shape a stronger, more grounded business. Today, Sun and Soil is not just a plant shop—it’s a space where people grow their own happiness, and I’m incredibly proud of that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not—but every challenge has played a role in shaping the business into what it is today. One of the most difficult chapters came during our transition into our current, permanent location. What should have been an exciting new beginning quickly became a stressful and uncertain time, as unexpected construction delays turned a planned 3-month closure into nearly 10 months—an incredibly tough setback for a small, growing business.
Beyond the larger hurdles, there have been the day-to-day struggles that come with wearing every hat. When you’re passionate about what you do, it’s easy to overextend yourself, and I’ve had to learn the importance of setting boundaries and finding a sustainable pace.
While it hasn’t always been easy, each obstacle has brought growth. These experiences have made me more resilient, adaptable, and even more committed to creating a meaningful, community-centered space through Sun and Soil.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sun and Soil Plant Parlor?
Sun and Soil is more than just a plant shop—it’s a space rooted in community, creativity, and connection. We specialize in houseplants and plant care education, offering a warm, approachable environment for everyone from first-time plant parents to seasoned collectors. Our popular terrarium bar allows customers to build their own custom creations, and our team is always available to guide and support plant care at any level.
What sets us apart is the experience we create. From dog-friendly shopping to wellness events like meditation and pilates to curated workshops and private dinners, we focus on blending plants with lifestyle. We believe in the idea that plants can help people grow—not just in their homes, but in their lives. That’s why our slogan is “Grow your own happiness.”
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the way we’ve built a community around that mission. We’ve become a space where people come to connect, decompress, celebrate, and create. Whether it’s a guest walking in with their dog, a group of friends making terrariums together, or a packed house for a workshop, the energy in the shop is always vibrant and welcoming.
For readers who haven’t visited us yet, I want them to know we’re not your typical plant store. We’re a place that invites you to slow down, engage your senses, and grow something meaningful—whether that’s a plant, a connection, or a moment of joy.
What were you like growing up?
I’m an only child, but I’ve always been a big people person. Even from a young age, I loved meeting new people, striking up conversations, and making connections—whether it was with classmates, neighbors, or total strangers. I’ve always been drawn to environments where I could engage with others, and that’s a big part of why I love what I do now. Getting to interact with our customers every day, hear their stories, and create a space where they feel welcomed and seen is incredibly fulfilling to me.
I was also naturally creative and detail-oriented growing up. I loved organizing things, coming up with new ideas, and finding ways to make ordinary moments feel special. In many ways, that mix of creativity, connection, and care is what led me to create Sun and Soil. It’s a reflection of so many parts of who I’ve always been.
