Community Highlights: Meet Kate Tipton of Purpose Under Palms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Tipton

Hi Kate, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2021, I finally took the leap to follow my biggest dream – moving to Charleston, SC. I wanted to live in my favorite city & start a business with my art, though it was just a hobby at the time – but things didn’t completely work out as planned. What seemed like unforeseen circumstances at the time, ended up being a blessing in disguise!

After just a few months of living in my dream city, I moved back to my hometown. I told myself that “if I leave, I’m chasing my second dream.” Though I was disappointed, it gave me the opportunity & courage to work on that second dream – owning a business! I was able to dive headfirst into building my business from scratch without distraction. I was determined to make this work without having to go back to a 9-5. So, I did!

I spent countless hours every single day researching, learning, investing my time & knowledge into something I believed in. I registered my business, had a logo created, opened a website, designed products with my art, & officially launched Purpose Under Palms in 2022!

Purpose Under Palms started as stationery & original artwork, but has now grown into Live Wedding & Event painting as well. What was once an idea & a dream, is now a reality thanks to my sweet clients & couples that continue to believe in me & support me every day!

And, I now get to do what I love not only in Charleston, but traveling everywhere! Chase your dreams!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Truthfully & thankfully, there has not been a moment where I’ve seen something as a true struggle. As cliche as it sounds, everything is a learning opportunity, so if there has ever been a moment of uncertainty, it’s because I’m not educated on the subject yet or having gotten out of my comfort zone in that way before.

If there is anything I’ve learned from starting a business, it’s that leaving your comfort zone is where you will grow the most! Don’t be afraid – the more you do it, the easier it gets!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Purpose Under Palms is all about art, all things coastal, & living with purpose! I offer original artwork, live wedding & event paintings, commissioned artwork, products using my art, & more.

My original fine art is usually coastal related, so you’ll see a lot of boats, oceans, marshes, palm trees, or anything related to the coast. It is my happy place & where I find the most inspiration. A new collection will be released in 2025!

Live Guest Portraits & Live Wedding Paintings have become a very large portion of my business. Live Guest Portraits are the perfect interactive favors & entertainment for any event, while Live Paintings are a wonderful way to capture a couple’s chosen moment to keep for generations to come!

My 2025 calendar is fully booked, so don’t hesitate to reach out for 2026!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Music always sets the tone for what I’m working on at the moment, so I often use Spotify & the playlists that they create for you based on the music you usually listen to. Since I was 15, I love to listen to slower, moody music with a deep meaning behind the lyrics – it’s what I’m able to concentrate most with because it really puts me in the feels, which is necessary for bringing passion to an art piece!

When I’m not working on a piece, I enjoy reading books, blogs, or watching Youtube videos that help grow my knowledge in art!
