Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Mirrielees of Sweet Carolina Pediatric Dentistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Mirrielees.

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins with a simple but powerful instinct: I wanted to make people smile-literally and figuratively. As a young girl, I was a spirited cheerleader, always wanting to make others feel seen, valued, and happy. That natural warmth and drive to uplift people would later become the foundation for my career.
Life, however, didn’t follow a straight and easy path. As a single mom, I faced the kind of challenges that test both resolve and purpose. But rather than stepping back from my ambitions, I leaned into them. With determination and grit, I put myself through dental school at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry-balancing textbooks, exams, and motherhood. Those years weren’t just about earning a degree; they were about proving to myself and my daughter what was possible through hard work and resilience.
Along the way, life offered me a beautiful turn. I met the most wonderful man and married him. Together, we moved down to Charleston and went on to have 2 more beautiful girls, to make a household of 4 women and Jeff. To balance it out, we got our sweet boy, Sully, an english cream golden retriever. My husband is Dr. Jeff, an amazing orthodontist in the Charleston area.
I practiced general dentistry for 13 years, gaining invaluable experience and forming meaningful connections. Yet even with a successful career, I felt a calling to do more-to specialize in a way that aligned even more closely with my natural love and compassion for children.
Answering that call, I was accepted to the Medical University of South Carolina’s Pediatric Dental program, and found myself back in school. It was a bold decision-one that required once again balancing family, education, and professional growth-but it reflected my lifelong commitment to evolving and serving others at the highest level.
Today, I am the proud co-owner of Sweet Carolina Pediatric Dentistry, alongside my partner, Dr. Rosa Barnes. In my practice, I get to combine clinical excellence with the same joyful, encouraging spirit that I had as that young cheerleader. I don’t just treat teeth-I get to create positive experiences with children and families, and try to make it fun!
So I would say my story is one of resilience, growth and heart-a reminder that success isn’t just about where you start, but about the courage to keep going, keep learning and keep caring deeply for others along the way.
And the best part to my story, my oldest daughter (the one who went through dental school with me) will be starting dental school in the fall, following in her mom’s footsteps.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has been fun, but far from easy. The path from a spirited cheerleader to a respected pediatric dentist and business owner came with real, defining struggles.

Balancing early motherhood while pursuing higher education demanded constant sacrifice. time, energy and finances were always stretched, and there was little room for rest or error.

Putting yourself through dental school and a pediatric residency, all while caring for a family, was intense and stressful. Long nights, financial strain, and emotional exhaustion were part of my daily life.

Emotional weight and self-doubt-like many people navigating demanding circumstances, there were so many moments of questioning whether I could keep going or if the sacrifice would pay off.

Balancing career growth with family life-managing a growing career while raising three daughters has required constant prioritization and, at times, personal sacrifice.

Returning to school mid-career-after 13 years in practice, making the decision to go back for specialized training in pediatric dentistry at the Medical University of South Carolina meant stepping back into student life-juggling coursework, clinical training, and family responsibilities all over again.

Starting and growing a business-launching Sweet Carolina Pediatric Dentistry came with pressure of entrepreneurship-building a patient base, managing operations, and ensuring high-quality care while maintaining work-life balance.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sweet Carolina Pediatric Dentistry is a family-owned office, co-owned by me, Dr. Jessica Mirrielees and Dr. Rosa Barnes. We are both moms with a big heart and deep love for children. We specialize in dentistry for children, adolescents and individuals with special healthcare needs. The care we provide goes far beyond routine checkups-it’s about creating a positive, lasting relationship between children and their dental health. What truly sets the practice apart is its blend of clinical experience and genuine compassion we bring as mothers and owners of the practice, there is no corporate agenda. Every detail is designed with children in mind, from a warm, welcoming environment to a team that understands how to ease anxiety and build trust. The focus isn’t just on treating teeth, but in educating families, encouraging confidence, and making each visit something kids can feel good about. It’s a place where experience, heart, and a commitment to individualized care come together to make every child feel safe, valued and loved.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The qualities that stand out most in my success are resilience, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose.
