Community Highlights: Meet Jen McConnell of McConnell Real Estate Partners & The McConnell Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen McConnell.

Hi Jen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Real estate has been a part of my story for nearly two decades. I started my career focused exclusively on custom home construction, which gave me a strong foundation in design, building, and understanding what makes a house truly work for a family. That hands-on experience has been invaluable—I don’t just see homes, I see potential, quality, and craftsmanship.

After over a decade in construction, I transitioned into full-time real estate sales, and it felt like the perfect next chapter. My husband Josh and I co-own McConnell Real Estate Partners, and together we’ve built a relationship-focused business that puts people first. Our clients know that we’re in their corner—not just during a transaction, but long after the closing table.

Over the years, I’ve been honored to become a top-producing agent in the Charleston area, and what means the most to me is that the majority of my business now comes from repeat clients and referrals. To me, that says everything. It’s a reflection of trust, results, and the relationships we’ve built. I never take that for granted.

It’s been a journey of hard work, hustle, and heart—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most meaningful journeys, it hasn’t always been a smooth road—but the challenges have shaped me in the best ways.

Starting out, shifting from custom home construction to residential sales came with a learning curve. I had to build a new client base, prove myself in a different space, and navigate a fast-moving market—all while raising a young family. There were moments of uncertainty, especially in those early years, but I stayed focused on doing right by my clients and building relationships one by one.

One of the most personal challenges we faced was when our son was diagnosed with cancer. That season of life put everything into perspective. It changed how I show up—not just in business, but in every area of my life. I learned how strong our community really is, and how meaningful it is to be surrounded by people who truly care.

Those experiences have made me a more empathetic, grounded agent. I know how important home is. It’s not just about buying or selling—it’s about feeling secure, supported, and confident in your next step.

So no, it hasn’t always been easy—but every struggle has been part of the story, and I’m grateful for the growth it’s brought.

We’ve been impressed with McConnell Real Estate Partners & The McConnell Foundation, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I wear two hats that are deeply connected—one as the co-owner of McConnell Real Estate Partners, and the other as the co-founder of The McConnell Foundation. Both are built on relationships, community, and a desire to make a meaningful impact.

McConnell Real Estate Partners is a boutique brokerage based on Isle of Palms in the Charleston area, and we specialize in helping clients buy and sell homes with confidence and clarity. What sets us apart is our full-service, relationship-first approach. We’re not just here for the transaction—we’re here for the long haul. The majority of our business comes from repeat clients and referrals, which is the highest compliment we could ever receive. I also bring a background in custom home construction, which gives my clients a deeper level of insight when it comes to evaluating properties, renovations, and design potential.

We’re known for going above and beyond—from hands-on staging and marketing to being a true advocate and consultant at every step of the process. Clients are surprised at our services beyond the sale, including auditing years following a purchase to ensure clients are taking advantage of potential tax saving opportunities as Josh is a former CPA and we are active real estate investors ourselves. Whether it’s a first-time buyer, a luxury listing, a vacation home or someone relocating to the islands, we treat every client like family. That personal touch and extra attention to our service level is something I’m really proud of.

We’re also known for being community focused. A percentage of every sale we make goes towards supporting our local children’s hospital, which is near and dear to our hearts and an important asset in our community. This has provided nearly $150,000 of support to the hospital to date. We also line our streets with flags on Memorial Day, set up activities for kids at our annual beach season kickoff festival, and support our local youth sports teams and schools throughout the year. Isle of Palms isn’t just where we work, it’s our home and where we raise our kids. It’s important to us to make special memories that our community will remember for years to come.

Alongside our real estate work, my husband Josh and I started The McConnell Foundation in honor of our son, who is a cancer survivor. Our nonprofit exists to improve the chances other children have of surviving cancer by raising funds for pediatric cancer research. Every September, we host the Shining Stars Gala—an elegant, heartfelt evening that brings together our community to support the research of Dr. Jacqueline Kraveka and her team at MUSC. Since launching, we’ve raised and donated nearly $175,000, and we’re just getting started.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that both of our ventures—real estate and nonprofit—are rooted in integrity, heart, and a desire to serve others well. Whether someone is buying their first home or attending our gala, I want them to feel seen, supported, and inspired to be part of something bigger.

At the end of the day, it’s all about connection—connecting people to homes, to community, and to causes that matter.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve learned that risk is often the doorway to growth—it’s rarely comfortable, but it’s almost always worth it.

I wouldn’t say I’m a reckless risk-taker, but I do believe in trusting your gut, doing your homework, and then being brave enough to take the leap. One of the biggest personal risks I ever took was moving to Charleston just two days after graduating college—not knowing a single person. I came here to open the first showroom for a national custom homebuilder. While I had no idea where the opportunity might lead, something in me just knew this was where I was meant to be. That decision shaped the entire trajectory of my life. Charleston became my home, my community, and eventually the place where I built both my family and my career.

Professionally, I’ve taken other big leaps—leaving the familiarity of custom home construction to pursue full-time real estate, starting our own brokerage, and launching a nonprofit from the ground up while raising a family and running a business.

But the most personal and vulnerable risk we ever took was sharing our son’s cancer journey and founding The McConnell Foundation. We weren’t sure how it would be received, but being open about that chapter of our lives led to deeper connection, support, and impact than we ever imagined.

In business and in life, I’ve found that the most meaningful risks often come from listening to your intuition and stepping into the unknown with purpose. You won’t always know exactly how things will unfold—but if you stay grounded in your values and lead with heart, risk has a way of turning into reward.
