Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Owen.
Hi Charles, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a family in which my dad fixed everything that was broken around the house, including the cars and electronics. I learned a lot from watching and helping my dad fix things throughout my life and that knowledge has translated into me loving to learn how to fix things and solve problems. I’ve had a lot of jobs in a lot of different fields but I’ve never been so satisfied as I was when I figured out that I could start my own business fixing things for other people and helping to solve their problems.
My wife, Ruth, who I met almost 15 years ago when I was living in Colorado, is from England. We got married 9 years ago and she was already running a small housekeeping operation with her sister that they had started up after we moved to Greenville in 2018. I was working in lawncare and landscaping but was taking on side work that involved a lot of property maintenance for other people. After we had our daughter and son we decided to roll the dice in 2022 and start our own company that would combine house keeping and home repair. That’s when Home and Happy was born.
Before we had kids we had moved around and travelled a lot as we both love adventure and seeing new sights and meeting new people. When we finally decided to settle down and start a family we chose Greenville because we fell in love with it instantly the first time we visited it. Ever since we started Home and Happy we’ve had the chance to work for so many great people in our local community. Our customers trust us to enter their homes and help them with their problems, be it a dirty house or a leaky faucet.
Now we’ve grown from just the two of us to a team of 10 amazing, professional and talented employees with one common vision: provide the best service we can to each unique customer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting our business while trying to raise two very young kids was not an easy road to take but it has been very rewarding. It has taught us the importance of work and family balance and has given us the ability to spend more quality time as a family and create a company that tries to promote a sense of family and community and real connection.
Also, neither of us knew anything about starting, running or growing a business when we first began Home and Happy. We’ve had to learn everything through experience. We started out doing every single aspect of the business while also working in the field. We would both spend our days doing work on other people’s homes then come home to do all of the admin work after we put the kids to bed. Working until midnight was not uncommon for us for the first few years. We’ve since figured out how to put systems in place to help make every aspect of our business run smoother. From a customer contacting us to the final invoice, we have slowly integrated programs and software that make life much easier for everybody.
We’ve been impressed with Home and Happy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Home and Happy is a local, family-run, fully insured handyman and housekeeping company. We specialize in small to medium-sized home repairs such as drywall patching, interior painting, plumbing and electrical fixture replacement, flooring, door hanging, shelving installation, interior trim work and much more.
Our housekeeping staff take care of house cleaning tailored to the customer’s specific needs.
Home and Happy believes in total customer satisfaction and we fully back our work. If a customer is not totally satisfied with the work we’ve done we will make it right. We’re not happy until our customers are happy.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was a Navy brat. My dad was in the Navy so we moved around quite a bit (me, my mom, dad and sister) because he got stationed somewhere new almost every two years. This helped me to adapt and to love travel and learning and meeting new people as well as feeling like a home can be anywhere as long as you’re with family.
I was really into sports from a young age, especially baseball and I played basketball on church leagues and backyard football with friends. I even won a bowling trophy when I was 12. I was also a nerd, and loved comic books, movies and music. All kinds of music. As I got older I never really liked school but I loved activity. I loved being around friends and family.
The way we moved around a lot really let me try new things and learn to be creative. This is something I still strive for as I play drums and guitar and still love sports.
