Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Onley-Livingston.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Healer’s Journey
When Spirit Shows up!
I was 21 years old and was pregnant with my first child when I first got to experience my grandmother in spirit form. She would visit me spiritually every time I was with child. I began to understand little signs of her being near, rather if it was humming when no one was humming or finding things that no one alive knew I had lost. Her humming was soothing to me and her spiritual connection with me was deeper than anything else I had known. Coming from a Christian background I shied away from speaking about what I was experiencing. I wouldn’t tell others of how I would encounter folks the week before they would transition. The look they would have in their eyes as if they were looking from their soul and through yours to something else. Their urgency to tell you things and the way physical boundaries meant nothing because they would get right up in your face and tell you whatever they had to say. I would go on about my day or week, then I would get the news that they had passed away.
I didn’t choose this path, the transcended souls chose me. Spirit chose me. Helping people with messages from beyond the physical realm is some of the deepest spiritual work I have ever done. Watching people have moments of healing and transformation through releasing guilt, saying things to their departed that they didn’t get to say while they were living, and helping those who have transitioned on speak the things they can no longer speak with words for the human ear to hear, is a gift that I now embrace. I say now, because I definitely didn’t start there. Here is a little about how I got started. I was licensed to preach the gospel in 2007 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Conway, SC. I was then ordained to the Gospel ministry in November of 2011 at Palmetto Missionary Baptist Church of Conway, SC. I furthered my Spiritual Discernment by completing my first year of requirements of a two year Seminary Degree in Masters of Arts in Religion Program of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. It was at seminary that I came in physical contact with a chair that was over 100 years old. I touched it and had an encounter of being in a space that was outside of the current physical space. I experienced what that soul had experienced in a part of their life. Then, I began to understand the connection between physical things, archetypes, and symbols that can connect us spiritually to the departed. After that I went to class and a professor began to write the title of a book on the board and said, “I am not sure who this is for, but here it is.” He wrote, Darkness is My Only Companion.” It was the answer for me. It gave me the ability to merge the language and experiences of my knowledge from the mental health profession and spirituality and how there is a need to be able to treat both the mental dimension of wellness as allowing for spiritual discernment and the difference between insanity, hallucinations, delusions, and spiritual experiences with ancestors or loved ones who had transcended. I then made the decision to hold both worlds and to create space for people to bring their whole self to therapy and to bring all of their spirituality and religious beliefs with them and use them in therapy to help them cope, heal, and live.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Struggles came in me believing in myself and my abilities. Even after all the degrees, accolades, and job opportunities, wondering if I was enough or skilled enough continued to play a role in me becoming who I was called to be.
Deciding to leave the pulpit to go to the altar of the world was not an easy decision. I have endured being called all sorts of things I cludingnot being of God, not being a Christian, being a witch, and much more. I have lost some friendships and access to places or organized religion because of my beliefs, however I now feel fully embraced by the spaces, places, and people who know and accept me in all my gifts, callings, and ways of being.

Why Integrating Therapy + Spirituality + Somatic Healing Matters
🧠 Healing on Multiple Levels
Traditional talk therapy often helps address the mental and emotional aspects of trauma, grief, or stress. But trauma and deep wounds are often stored in the body and energy field, not just the mind. By incorporating somatic practices, expressive arts, energy healing (like Reiki), and spiritually informed work, Angel offers clients a more holistic path to healing, honoring body, mind, soul, and spirit together. This kind of integrative care supports deeper transformation.
🌿 Nervous System Regulation & Emotional Release
Energy healing and somatic therapies help calm the nervous system, reduce chronic stress, and allow buried emotions or trauma to surface safely. According to traditional Reiki practice, calming the spirit and attending to energy flow helps create space for the body and mind to release tension and stored trauma. This helps clients move from a state of survival (fight/flight/freeze) into rest, presence, and healing, which is especially powerful for those carrying intergenerational or cultural trauma, generative grief (e.g. postpartum, loss, transitions), or high stress from life changes.
✨ Mind-Body-Soul Alignment & Sustainable Self-Care
By combining therapy, energy work, spirituality, somatic awareness, and expressive arts, Angel supports clients in reconnecting with themselves on all levels. Over time, this fosters deeper self-trust, inner peace, restored boundaries, and a more integrated sense of identity. Clients are supported to align with their truth, including their cultural, spiritual, and personal histories, making healing not just about coping, but about reclaiming wholeness.
What It Looks Like to Work With Angel: The Experience & Vibe
Working with Angel is about gentleness, depth, affirmation, and transformation:
* Expect a holistic intake, not just assessing symptoms but exploring spiritual beliefs, cultural background, life history, and personal goals.
* Sessions can provide a mix of talk-based, somatic, and energy-focused, depending on what your mind, body, and spirit are calling for.
* There’s space for grief, vulnerability, shadow work, but also for joy, spiritual reconnection, and self-love.
* Angel’s style is warm, affirming, spiritually inclusive, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed.
In short: whether you’re navigating loss, a big life transition, identity struggles, creative blocks, or spiritual longing, Angel offers a container where you can heal deeply and gently.
I provide care, as a Soul Coach, Reiki Healer, and Ancestor Internediary as a part of the Healing Collective at Salt & Detox Oasis in Myrtle Beach, SC

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have found that mentors are just as important as therapist and doctors. I love the fact that I always am learning and growing. I think we all should have someone to look up to, ask questions of, and get direction. I also know the value of charting your own course. Both are equally important. It’s important that we shine our light I. The way we have been called to do so regardless of if we see others doing it or not. Our Soul Knows the Way and the soul is the greatest guide.
