Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Atkins-Scott.
Hi Alicia, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m the CEO and Lead Piano Instructor of Innovative Piano Studio. I’ve been playing piano since the age of 7 and it brings me joy to be able to share this passion with my students. I understand that each student has their own unique learning style, and it’s my duty to find out what that is and adapt my lessons accordingly. My career brings me such fulfillment and joy! It’s such a thrill and daily adventure to help my students discover the gifts they have within themselves and give them opportunities to share those gifts with others. I strive to make sure all of my students also have a lot of fun along the way! I believe in cultivating a warm environment full of positivity and love, which I believe is the most productive to learning and creativity. We all learn in our own unique way and we all express ourselves differently. Music gives us an outlet to focus our attention, create disciplined practice habits, and touch others with its beauty. I could go on and on! Let me conclude by sharing what music has done for me. From a very early age and through many seasons of my life, both good and bad, music has been a joy and a comfort in more ways than I could write. I am blessed as one who has reaped its many benefits and I live my life to share that joy with the parents and students of IPS.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve had my share of ups and downs as an entrepreneur. I began teaching in 2016, so at that time of my life, I had to manage working in corporate America & managing teaching part-time. I did this until Sept 2019, which is when I went full-time with Innovative. Once I made this huge faith move, doors were opened and I began to excel in ways that at one point in my life I dreamed about. Then the pandemic hit in 2020, which caused me to transition from in-person learning to virtual for a few months. At the time I didn’t realize how this would actually benefit me going forward. IPS now services in-person students in the upstate of SC and we offer virtual classes to students in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina. IPS wouldn’t be where it is without God!
We’ve been impressed with Innovative Piano Studio, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Innovative Piano Studio offers personalized piano lessons and instructive services to students young and old. It is our goal and mission to push each student to become their best self in all areas of life. In-person lessons are offered to students in Upstate South Carolina and virtual lessons are offered to students from coast to coast. IPS is highly committed to helping others discover and reach their full potential. We offer a well-rounded curriculum which includes note reading, ear training, music appreciation, and much more. We focus on developing their own unique style and becoming an Innovative Musician. As a teacher, I take the influence that I have with my students very serious! Sometimes lessons aren’t just about teaching them to how to play. My lessons are about affirming them and pushing them to become their best self in all aspects of life.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned as an entrepreneur and a teacher is balance. Having a family, running a business, and also making sure that I make time for myself has not been easy. Learning to say no and also setting healthy boundaries has helped me tremendously.
