Check Out Zy’Reque Green’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zy’Reque Green

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely, I’d love to!

So, let me take you back to when I was 13 years old—honestly, that moment feels like it was just yesterday. It all started in a sixth-grade science class, of all places. My teacher had us working on a project for the periodic table of elements. Each group was assigned an element, and we had to come up with a creative way to present it. My group chose to create a rap, and at the time, I had no idea how seamlessly everything would fall into place.

I went home, and to my surprise, the lyrics just poured out of me. I was stunned at how natural it felt, almost like the words were already there, waiting to be discovered. When it was finally time for us to perform, I was pretty nervous—it was my first time rapping in front of anyone, let alone an entire class. But the moment I stood up and started rapping, something magical happened. The class went wild! They loved it, and honestly, that overwhelming reaction was the confirmation I didn’t even know I needed. That feeling, that energy—it was everything.

From that day forward, I knew music was where I was meant to be. The journey hasn’t always been smooth, but the passion has never wavered. I’ve had the honor of appearing on the news, performing on America’s Got Talent, and being a part of Could Have Been Records. I’ve also had the privilege of winning numerous awards and traveling across the country to perform, even for the NBA! But, the thing that truly means the most to me is how my music has empowered and inspired so many people along the way.

Music has always been my vehicle for change and connection, and my ultimate goal has always been to make a difference through my art—whether that’s through a powerful performance or a lyric that resonates with someone. That’s the journey that has brought me here, and I’m beyond excited for where it will take me next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am now definitely hasn’t been smooth, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Life has thrown its challenges at me, and each one has shaped me into who I am today—stronger, more determined, and more focused on my purpose.

I lost both of my parents when I was just seven years old. My mother was my biggest cheerleader—she believed in me in ways no one else could. My father, on the other hand, was my protector and provider, and his loss was just as profound. After my mom passed, my grandparents stepped in to raise me. They were traditional in their values, with school being the primary focus, and honestly, everything else felt secondary to them. They did the best they could, but I often found myself feeling down, disappointed, and sometimes even lost in my dreams of music. They weren’t able to understand that part of me, but their love and support kept me grounded through the hardest moments.

Growing up, I faced a lot of judgment—not just because of my background, but also because I’m a trans woman. That part of my identity has often led people to dismiss or disregard my talents before they even hear a note of my music. It’s tough, and at times, the negativity feels like a weight I can’t shake off. But what keeps me going is the love and energy I pour into my work. Every performance, every lyric, comes from a place of authenticity and passion. Despite the odds, I work hard—sometimes at four jobs—to support my career and sustain my lifestyle. And while it’s not always easy, there are times when I’m still falling short, financially or emotionally.

But in those moments of struggle, music is my anchor. When it gets overwhelming, I take a break, and then I return to my craft like it’s the first time I ever touched it. Music has this way of re-energizing me, lifting me up when nothing else can. It’s the reminder that, no matter what others say or how hard things get, I have something powerful to offer the world.

Through all of the hardship, the one thing that has never wavered is my determination. I always remember the support from my grandparents, their belief in me, and how much I owe to their sacrifices. With that in my heart, I push through the adversity and keep moving forward—because I know that success doesn’t come easy, but it does come to those who never give up. And every challenge I’ve faced only makes my victories that much sweeter.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Oh, where do I even begin? Let me give you the full Zy’Reque experience—because let’s be real, I’m not just your average rapper. A college professor once told me, “You don’t just rap—you put on a show. You’re an entertainer.” And let me tell you, I took that to heart! So now, when anyone asks what I do, I don’t just say “rapper” (though I do spit bars that’ll make your jaw drop). I proudly say, “I’m an entertainer”—because that’s exactly what I am, and then some.

I go beyond just the music. I’m in charge of my own setlist, choreograph my own dances, style myself, and dress my dancers. Yes, honey, I do it all. The entire show, from the beats to the visuals, is my vision coming to life. And let me tell you, it’s no small feat. I started my own stage coaching business while I was in college, helping mold and motivate my peers to be the best versions of themselves. Because listen, if we’re going to take the stage, we’re going to take it all the way to the top.

What really sets me apart, though, is the bigger picture I have for myself. I don’t just want to be known as a great rapper or performer—I want to be known as someone who owns their business, takes control of their destiny, and helps others rise along the way. It’s about lifting up the people around me as I climb. That’s what I’m most proud of: not just the accolades and the stage presence, but the fact that I’ve been able to inspire and empower others to chase their dreams.

When I watch icons like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Chris Brown, I’m always in awe of their craft, their hustle, their presence. And that’s exactly the kind of impression I want to leave on people. I want them to look at me and say, “Wow, if Zy’Reque can do it, so can I!” It’s not just about the music or the performance—it’s about making people feel something and giving them the courage to go after their own greatness. So yeah, I don’t just perform; I create, I empower, and I make magic happen. I’m here to show the world that you can be more than just one thing, and trust me—this journey is just getting started.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What’s not to love about my city? Let’s start with the obvious: my beloved HBCU, Benedict College! Honestly, it’s my favorite thing about this place. It molded me, poured wisdom into me, and gave me the knowledge I needed to become who I am today. Plus, it’s a hub that brings people from all over the world together to motivate, inspire, and set them up for success—not just academically, but in every way possible. From supporting student businesses to lifting up artists with big dreams, Benedict is like the heart and soul of my city. I love it.

Now, as for what I like the least… I’m not one to complain, but… those potholes! They can be a whole mood. You drive over one a little too hard and your tire’s like, “Nope, I’m out!” It’s a real test of your car’s loyalty, let me tell you. But hey, no city’s perfect, right? That little bit of road drama aside, I truly do love my city—it’s home, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
