I am Yichen Wang, also known as Yc, an explorer in the realms of creativity and design. My journey began with a deep-rooted passion for storytelling and expressing complex emotions through various mediums. This quest for articulation beyond words led me to Pratt Institute, where I pursued a Master’s in Fine Arts, specializing in Communications Design. A blend of personal exploration and professional evolution has shaped my path. Initially an industrial designer, I was captivated by the user-centric approach of Steve Jobs and the meticulous detail of Barrier-Free Design in Japan. These influences and inspiration from IDEO’s Shopping Cart Project steered me towards UX design. Over the years, I’ve expanded my horizons, delving into UX, transformation, and packaging design. Today, I proudly define myself as a UX designer, focusing on creating designs that evoke joy and streamline the user experience. My work, including award-winning projects like the ‘O’friends’ app and ‘Tracing’ typeface, reflects my commitment to emotional design and empathetic user experience. I continuously strive to create designs that meet practical needs and resonate emotionally with users, building connections and enhancing interactions.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
In the early stages of my career, the primary challenge was identifying what I wanted to do and figuring out how to turn my passion and vision into practical design solutions. This phase was marked by significant self-exploration and career positioning. My journey involved exploring a wide range of creative fields. Whenever I felt a strong pull towards something, I would dive in, boldly experimenting and learning about the field. This exploration was more than just trying new things; it was a profound reflection on why certain areas intrigued me and how they could integrate with my design approach. Through this, I could pinpoint my true interests and recognize my strengths. This comprehensive exploration was key to realizing how I could channel my passion and strengths into user-centric designs. Deciding to specialize in user experience design was an exhilarating turning point. It tapped effectively into my observational skills and empathy. However, transforming my passion and vision into tangible design projects took little work. Though challenging, each step in this process contributed significantly to shaping my approach and defining my path in the design world.

As a professional in the creative industry, I’ve specialized in user experience design, placing a strong emphasis on emotional design. My approach revolves around crafting intuitive and emotionally resonant digital experiences that deeply connect with users. This involves ensuring that each design addresses practical challenges and resonates with the user’s emotional needs. This ability to tune into emotional nuances sets me apart in this field. Diving into areas that genuinely interest you is crucial for uncovering your unique style, which significantly shapes and enhances your design strategy. This process of self-exploration is essential for developing a distinctive voice and approach in your work. The creative field constantly evolves, marked by new trends, technologies, and practices. It’s vital to stay informed and adapt to these changes. Embrace your curiosity, challenge yourself, and view every obstacle as an opportunity for growth and learning. By remaining open to new experiences and continually seeking knowledge, you’ll refine your skills and ensure your work stays innovative and relevant.
