Check Out Tim Graves’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Graves.

Hi Tim, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always believed hospitality is something you learn best by jumping in and doing the work, and that’s how my story started. Early in my career, I took on a variety of roles in resorts and hotels, getting a feel for everything from guest service to operations. That hands-on experience gave me a real appreciation for the people behind the scenes and how all the moving parts come together to create a great guest experience.

Over time, I grew into leadership roles and eventually landed in Columbia, where I’ve spent more than a decade leading IHG Army Hotels at Fort Jackson. It’s a unique setting—part hotel, part mission support—serving soldiers, families, and even international military students. No two days are the same, and that’s part of what’s kept it so interesting over the years.

Along the way, I’ve had the chance to work with people from around the world and stay closely connected to the local community. Whether it’s supporting events, working alongside Army leadership, or just making sure guests feel at home during an important time in their lives, the job has always been about people first.

Like any long career, there have been challenges, but those moments tend to shape you the most. They’ve reinforced the importance of staying steady, keeping a sense of humor, and surrounding yourself with a strong team.

Looking back, it’s been a rewarding journey—and one that’s still evolving. I still enjoy the day-to-day as much as ever, especially the simple moments where you know you’ve made someone’s experience just a little bit better.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road—hospitality rarely is—but that’s part of what makes it such a rewarding career.

Like most people in this industry, I’ve experienced the highs and the real challenges. The biggest, of course, was navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic. Overnight, everything changed—occupancy dropped, operations had to be rethought, and the focus shifted to safety, flexibility, and simply staying open. It was a tough period, but it also brought out the resilience of our teams and reinforced how important adaptability is in this business.

Even outside of global events, there have been ongoing challenges—labor shortages, changing guest expectations, and the unique dynamics of operating on a military installation where mission needs can shift quickly. We’ve had times where large groups arrive or depart with little notice, or when official travel changes impact occupancy overnight. You learn quickly how to pivot and keep things running smoothly.

Within IHG, I’ve also grown through different leadership challenges—building new teams, navigating turnover in key roles, and helping develop future leaders. Those moments aren’t always easy, but they’re some of the most meaningful parts of the job.

There have also been broader economic ups and downs that affect travel—government shutdowns, budget constraints, and shifts in travel patterns—all of which directly impact how we operate day to day.

But through all of it, those challenges have really shaped my approach to leadership. They’ve taught me to stay steady, communicate clearly, and focus on the people around me. In the end, it’s not about avoiding the bumps in the road—it’s about how you handle them and keep moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I serve as the General Manager of IHG Army Hotels at Fort Jackson, where I oversee a large, multi-building hotel operation supporting soldiers, their families, and military training programs. On any given day, that can mean everything from traditional hotel operations to coordinating with Army leadership to ensure we’re aligned with the installation’s mission. It’s a role that blends hospitality, logistics, and a constant need to adapt.

Over the years, I’ve come to specialize in leading complex operations and building strong, dependable teams. Our environment is unique—many of our guests are here for important milestones in their careers—so consistency, communication, and empathy really matter. I also spend a lot of time developing leaders, helping team members grow and take the next step in their careers.

I’m probably best known for bringing a positive attitude to the workplace. No matter what’s going on, I try to keep things upbeat and focused on solutions. I believe energy is contagious, and if you show up with the right mindset—and a big smile—it sets the tone for the entire team. I also enjoy finding creative, innovative ways to solve problems and improve how we operate, especially in an environment where no two days are the same.

What I’m most proud of is the culture we’ve built. It’s a team that supports each other, takes pride in their work, and genuinely cares about the experience we provide to our guests. You see it in the way people step up during busy times and in how they look out for one another.

What sets me apart is a combination of experience, approachability, and perspective. I’ve been in the industry long enough to have seen a wide range of challenges, but I stay very connected to the day-to-day. I focus on keeping things steady, staying positive, and always looking for ways to do things better—for our team, our guests, and the community we serve.

How do you define success?
For me, success has always been about more than titles or numbers—it’s about growth and purpose. I’ve always connected with the idea that success is “the progressive realization of a worthy goal.” It’s not just about reaching a destination, but about continually moving forward, improving, and working toward something meaningful.

Professionally, that means building strong teams, creating a positive environment, and knowing that we’re making a difference for the people we serve every day. If the team is growing, the operation is improving, and our guests feel cared for, that’s success to me.

On a personal level, success is even more important at home. I want to raise my two kids to be successful in their own way—doing what they want to do, finding what makes them happy, and becoming good, capable people. If they grow up with strong values, confidence, and the ability to pursue their own paths, that’s the kind of success that really matters most to me.
