Check Out Private Violet’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Alley

Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My partner Reid Calchary and I met in 2021 at a music studio we worked at. We connected not only as romantic partners, but also as music partners. Our vision for our future and our love of Indie music inspired us to start writing music together, thus creating our temporary duo that we called “Private Violet”. We wrote 5 songs together and recorded them at an incredible music studio in Upstate, SC called “Studio 101”. We released these songs as an EP called “The First Glance” and it was our first big project. While Reid and I started building this “Private Violet” brand, we decided we wanted to play live shows and that we would need to grow and gain new members to be able to play live. Our old friend Skyler Hall joined us as our drummer, and slowly but surely we gained 3 new members: guitarists Daniel Kurtz and Louis Keenan, and bassist Spencer Watts. We are so grateful to them and we are fortunate to have such an amazing group of guys to work with. Now as a 6-piece band, we have been writing new music together and playing countless live shows in the Upstate and even in North Carolina. We are currently writing our first album and looking to book more shows. We are so appreciative of the community that has supported us thus far, and we are so excited to keep growing this musical community and sharing music with others!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road for us. Writing and producing music is the easiest part of being a musician. The hardest part is the marketing, building credibility and making connections. It takes countless hours of editing, creating social media content, recording, and posting to create a strong online foundation for a band. We had to do all of this work ourselves, on top of writing and producing music, which takes a lot of time, effort and creativity. Thankfully, we have created a strong start to our online presence and the more that we post and play live, we continue to grow and connect to our audience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Indie electro-pop meets funky, alternative jazz – lush synths, compelling vocal melodies and lyrics, and dynamic progressions create the “Private Violet” sound. Reid Calchary (pianist & composer) and myself (singer & songwriter) are Private Violet’s songwriters and we are both classically trained musicians and have professionally studied music since early childhood. We are committed to making music a career, and our goal is to write music that is authentic to us and our experiences to move and inspire those listening. Every aspect of our music is true to ourselves and our musical skills, including hand-made synths, collaborative writing within the band, and story-telling through the lyrics of our songs. Our music has been described as “refreshing” and our presence on stage as “eclectic”. We are most proud of the Private Violet sound we have created, as it is raw, enlivening and complex. Our music is inspired by artists such as Flipturn, Men I Trust and The Marias. We are excited for what our presence will bring in the musical community of Upstate, SC and beyond — and we are hoping to usher a flowering movement of young, fresh and fun music that the community has never seen before.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are open to any and all collaborations, and we appreciate all of the support we can get! The best way to support us is by listening to our music, following our social media pages, and sharing our music and posts. Every single listen, like, comment, and share helps us reach new audiences!
