Check Out Pearce Butcher’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pearce Butcher

Hi Pearce, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Being a landscape designer means you find yourself at the intersection of science, creativity, and problem solving. Looking back over my childhood, these were the things that I was drawn to. I loved being outside and running a bit wild, but also loved to draw and paint. As the oldest sister of 3 girls, I was often the one in charge (by choice or by default) and was also fiercely independent. I headed to college at Furman University and chose a double major in Art and Environmental Science so I could pursue my two interests simultaneously. After an internship in Washington, DC with a landscape design-build firm the summer after my junior year, I knew I’d found my niche. I went to work for the same company after graduation, and over the course of 3 years earned a Masters Certificate of Landscape Design from George Washington University.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was lucky to find my career path during college, but having children early and moving often for my husband’s post-graduate degrees and job changes added some detours to the journey. I took a child-rearing sabbatical from full-time work when the kids were younger, but still made time to work freelance occasionally for landscape contractors or homeowners. We moved 5 times in the first 10 years of our marriage! When we moved to Greenville from Phoenix in 2015 I officially re-started Pearce B Designs by filling an LLC, and began cold-calling landscape contactors to put my name out there and build relationships. Being a work-from-home mom of 3 is always a bit of a challenge, but I also love the flexibility of running my own business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pearce B Designs is a boutique design-only firm here in Greenville, SC. I pride myself in being a good listener, thinking outside the box, and finding the best use of your space for your lifestyle. I want to think about each project holistically — from the moment you arrive at the property, to your views first thing in the morning, to where you will spend time outdoors. I want to design a space that accommodates all the outdoor living spaces you need, and make sure those spaces flow together smoothly and connect well with the home. I like to the take the time to really think through how people will use the space, move through the space, and feel when they are in that space. I want to pay attention to important focal points from within the home as well, make sure we add interest and privacy when needed.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being a good team member with each person who will be a part of the project: the homeowner, landscape contractor, builder, interior designer, etc. My tagline is “creating beautiful spaces for functional outdoor living” and that truly is my hearts design for each client.
