Today we’d like to introduce you to Pascale Sexton
Hi Pascale, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a beautiful little village in Burgundy France, and came to study photography at the University of South Carolina in 2000. Upon graduating I moved to Turkey and focused mostly on raising my children. When we got back to the US after the 2016 military coup, my artistist journey really started. I was pregnant with my 4 th child and took a few pottery classes in Columbia SC. From there everything seemed to blossom. I started to paint, learned to work with clay, joined the SCA artist group, signed up for shows and exhibits and in 2023 I opened an art studio for children and adults in Johns Island called The Red Barn Art Studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a very smooth road, mostly because of the help and guidance of other artist friends! Opening a studio for children to come work with clay and other type of art was always a dream, and I feel blessed that it happened.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I paint vibrant acrylic abstract landscapes and since I love working with clay I add buildings in clay tiles on them. It is not something I have seen anywhere before and I remember thinking this was the weirdest mixed media idea ever! To be able to express myself more effectively I started to make those little flat clay figurines that I called “The Little Flat People”. They are an expression of us, humans, in our most inner playful and childlike sense!
How do you think about luck?
I feel I have been very lucky on my journey with art but that’s because of all the great artist friends I have and the people who support my work! For the art studio I received a lot of support from the local community. It feels like it was something needed, an happy place for children and adults to come and be creative.
