Check Out Michelle McKdavis’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle McKdavis.

Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am lucky enough to have been born into an artistic family. Among them, my mother and grandfather were both gifted landscape artists. As a child I enjoyed drawing, but never pursued it seriously until I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41. During recovery I began painting for the first time and found it surprisingly therapeutic. It was at that point that I embarked on an educational journey to learn everything I could and surround myself with other artists. I earned a BFA from the University of Alabama, an M.Ed from Middle Tennessee State University, as well as an MFA from Florida State University. I taught for a few years but now I devote all my time to building a career as a professional artist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Outside of the early illness, I have enjoyed very good health and while this path has not always been easy and was often soul crushing, I have to say it has been a blast. Ive learned so much from the highs and especially the lows and Ive met some amazing people along the way! I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create oil paintings that explore themes of identity, mythology, nature, and art history. My work intertwines personal and cultural narratives blending symbolic imagery with storytelling. I draw inspiration from historical traditions such as folk tales, female and cultural politics, and legends. I consider myself a contemporary portraitist in the style of expressionistic surrealism. Recently I have introduced sewing into my paintings with the idea of reinvigorating the humble “women’s craft” and raising it to a higher level of art.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am an avid listener of books on Audible while I paint. I enjoy historical fiction, magical realism, and mysteries especially when the writing is philosophical, lyrical, and/or whimsical. I also enjoy podcasts, and biographies about current and past artists, as well as techniques, history, and innovations in art. Anything that keeps the wheels of creativity turning helps, but sometimes it is good to just unplug and enjoy silence.
