Today we’d like to introduce you to Marci Millsap.
Hi Marci, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a retired veteran, a wife, and a proud mother of three who loves the gym and enjoys all things outdoors—hiking, walking, and chasing waterfalls. After retiring, I noticed a sense of community that needed to be built. When my father passed away in 2023, I made the decision to heal myself through nature, and that’s how Let’s Hike South Carolina began August 2024 (formally Let’s Hike Columbia). I created a Facebook group and invited people from all across South Carolina to join our group. It was and still is a hit 2000 people so far. We now hit the trails two to three times a month, hosting group hikes centered around family, love, and joy. The highlight of this group is that it welcomes people from all different walks of life. Everyone is welcome.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I look back,I can honestly say the journey hasn’t been easy and smooth. There have been seasons of loss, uncertainty, and moments where I questioned myself. I’ve faced challenges that tested my faith,my patience, and my strength .But every obstacle taught me somethin: how to adapt, how to lead under pressure, and how to keep going even when I felt tired.I’ve learned that growth often comes through discomfort, and resilience is built in the hard moments. In retrospect, I wouldn’t call it easy but i would call it purposeful.Every lesson shaped me into the woman I am today
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a serial entrepreneur with many talents, currently focusing on Let’s Hike South Carolina and in my last year of college to complete my Bachelors of Science in Health Administration. I also assist my husband with his trucking business, as well as help manage our family vending machine business under Millsap Enterprise. In addition, I am currently homeschooling my youngest son. As the group organizer, I plan and coordinate hikes throughout the state of South Carolina while encouraging others to step up and lead hikes as we are currently touring all South Carolina State Parks! We also created a 12 Hike Challenge which challenges hikers to get out and hike at least 1 mile a month! Medals will be rewarded at the end of the year!
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, where I built my foundation and graduated from high school.I was taught to respect others, work for what I wanted, and value community. My parents kept me in church which taught me the importance of serving others. Those early lessons shaped my character and the way I lead In 2001 I made the decision to leave home and join the military. It was a big step, but I was ready for something greater than myself. Over those 20 years,I traveled throughout the country. The journey required sacrifice, but it also gave me confidence and clarity about who I am. Choosing to retire at Fort Jackson was a full-circle moment. Laying down the uniform with pride while steeping into a new season rooted in a family, healing, and purpose.
