Check Out Laurie Candelaria’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Candelaria.

Laurie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my journey by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico, where I focused on metalsmithing and jewelry design. Over the years, I explored several artistic passions, including stained glass, before ultimately finding my love for watercolor. I was drawn to watercolor for its softness and fluidity, which lend themselves beautifully to capturing nature.

Although I hold a fine arts degree, I am largely self-taught in watercolor. I am still learning and working on refining my skills. Over the past two years, I have worked to establish myself as a watercolor artist—building my website, selling original artwork and commissions, and expanding my watercolor classes throughout the Charleston area. I am now seeking opportunities to place my work in local galleries and continue growing within the Charleston arts community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an artist has its own set of challenges. I’ve always loved creating, but learning how to sell my work has been hard. Navigating social media, promoting myself, and selling tickets for events requires a completely different skill set than painting. It has also taken courage to apply to galleries and step into the role of teacher. Trying to balance my professional life as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist while growing my art business makes life very busy.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Charleston-based watercolor artist and instructor. I specialize in coastal scenes, wildlife, pet portraits, and home portraits. My work is rooted in the Lowcountry. The beauty of the marshes, beaches, birds, and flowers. I’m known for soft and lightly textured watercolor paintings. I am also known for creating a fun and encouraging environment in my classes.

What I’m most proud of is building my watercolor career over the past few years, especially growing my classes across Charleston. It has been amazing to help my students from start to finish and see them leave with a finished painting they’re proud of. It has been very meaningful to help someone discover they can paint.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would recommend joining some local business groups or finding a mentor who could help with business-related questions.
