Check Out Keiko Striplin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keiko Striplin.

Hi Keiko, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born & raised in Tokyo, Japan . Left Japan in 1987 because of feeling unfitted for traditional Japanese culture there.
Since I went to FIT learning fashion designs I was able to open an alteration shop in rural town in upstate SC where my 3 daughter’s father was from. I closed down my business after all of my daughters left home for colleges and I moved to NYC to start a new career. Briefly tired of sewing so I opened a small healthy soup and salad restaurant In Harlem, NYC. Through my small business I met many inspiring artists of all kinds. So my passion for design clothes was rekindled. I felt I was able to design garments freely in my own style first time in my life and my own style was established in that era of my life.
After closing my restaurant my youngest daughter was feeling stuck after graduating college of Charleston being employed at a boutique. She also has the strong sense of freedom of mind started an earring making business the tiny tassel. I joined a year later design and making garment for her southern colorful charming brand. Forward 9 years, I’m ready to starting my own brand finally! This year. Being a mother is a huge sacrifice for others to be successful and so rewarding. And never a moment of wasted experience but always growing mature. God has brought me this far. I will be 60 years old this year and I am pursuing my freedom to design and wear what I really want from now on forward!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had relationally hard time with my traditional Japanese parents. Raised my daughters as a single mom in new language and cultures. So it was hard

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
