Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Brockert.
Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We lost our 14 year old son, Julian, to suicide in 2024. We tried to address the school district directly to effect some changes in the way bullying is minimalized constantly. After the school district continued to maintain its silence, and we had attempted to get other charities involved, we were forced to start our own charity. We’re coming up on two years since we lost Julian, and since our founding we’ve hosted one event and are planning our second. Our charity should be fully self-sustaining after this next event.
I can give significantly more details, though I just need to know where to draw the line.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. Since our tragic loss and immense trauma, the school board has fought to prevent any public knowledge from being made available. We were adamantly trying to prevent creating another charity for this cause, but I wasn’t getting much attention. Since founding the charity, we’re being taken more seriously. While we would have preferred to not start a charity, it’s opened a lot of doors that were previously closed.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My current career is as a Plant Engineer at a data center. My specialty is mechanical engineering, civil engineering, water chemistry, and structural. I was previously a Navy Nuke Machinist’s Mate (of the ELT variety) and hold a nuclear engineering technology bachelor’s of science degree. It’s worth the paper it’s printed on, but was a “check in the box” for future potential. I’m currently enrolling to earn a master’s degree, for another “check in a box” for an upcoming possibility.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Absolutely do the research! While learning, make sure to familiarize yourself with online resources. Definitely read a few other startup stories.
