Check Out Heather Lancaster’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Lancaster.

Hi Heather, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
By the end of high school I was prepared to attend art school in the Northeast, but changed direction at the eleventh hour – hesitant to eat, sleep and breathe art for the next four years. In the end I chose the liberal arts route and concentrated heavily on studio art, art history and historic preservation.. After stints in environmental design in New York and Atlanta, I had my three children. I started drawing again when they were very little, during nap times and late at night. I made small renderings for them, meant to encourage quiet dreaming and a sense of awareness and responsibility for the environment. Now my work is larger in scale, but still completely inspired by nature. The natural world has always played a significant role in directing my life and perspective, how I raised my children, and what informs my work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a circuitous road. Life isn’t linear….it consists of twists and turns, peaks and valleys….each of which presents its own degree of adversity. Navigating these periods of uncertainty and/or hardship can be dicey, but teaches you that you’re smarter than you know and stronger than you think. Art is a scary business, unpredictable and incredibly subjective. Gallery partnerships make it smoother. I personally wouldn’t do it without them.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in large scale works on paper which explore the unique and beautiful gestures found in the natural world. Pieces start with a graphite drawing and evolve with layers of India Ink and charcoal. I think birds are my most recognizable subject, but I love the challenge of studying and painting mammals too.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
